Our oceans cover more than 70% of the planet. They provide the air we breathe, the food we eat, and the climate stability we depend on. But they also need our protection. Through the Blue Nature Alliance, supported by the Conservation International and funded in part by the Global Environment Facility, we are making a real impact: ??1.86 million km2 of ocean now under new or expanded protection ??685,000 km2 upgraded to stronger conservation levels ??21.9 million km2 where we partner—an area the size of Canada, the U.S., and Mexico combined ??161 marine areas supported across 39 engagements worldwide ??11 long-term financing plans to ensure conservation efforts last for generations With 100+ partners, we are working to keep our ocean healthy, vibrant, and resilient for people and nature. This #WorldWaterDay, let’s celebrate these achievements and commit to going even further. Because when we protect the ocean, we protect our future. ???? #WorldWaterDay #ocean #conservation #BlueNatureAlliance #marine #protection #climate #resilience

On this #InternationalDayofForests, we celebrate things like the Futa Mawiza Biocultural Territory, a vast expanse of Andean-Patagonian forests safeguarded by the Indigenous Mapuche and Tehuelche Peoples. These forests are not just ecosystems, they are living landscapes of culture, tradition, and resilience. Through the Inclusive Conservation Initiative (ICI), supported by Conservation International and funded by the Global Environment Facility, indigenous organizations in Argentina are leading the protection of these sacred lands. Their deep ecological knowledge and sustainable land management practices ensure that the region's biodiversity, water sources, and cultural heritage remain intact for future generations. Indigenous-led conservation is essential to global climate and biodiversity goals. When we support Indigenous stewardship, we strengthen the world’s forests, safeguard species, and uphold human rights. #InternationalDayOfForests #inclusive #conservation #natureforclimate #protectforests

Exciting news for conservation in Mexico!?? ? This new initiative, aiming to boost climate resilience in the #Yucatán, is the first Green Climate Fund project to receive co-financing from the Global Biodiversity Framework Fund (#GBFF) under the Global Environment Facility —a major milestone for conservation finance! By mobilizing collaborative finance to protect the essential services provided by the region’s #reefs, #mangroves, and #coastaldunes, this inspiring project looks to support community-led ecosystem restoration. Coming together with government ministries, like la SecretarÃa de Hacienda y Crédito Público, CONANP -Comisión Nacional de áreas Naturales Protegidas, and La SecretarÃa de Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales (SEMARNAT), is crucial to tackling the growing impacts of #climatechange, and we look forward to seeing the progress of this project!
Marine and coastal ecosystems in the Yucatán Peninsula are threatened by intensifying climate impacts. But a bold new project is fighting back. With GCF's support, Fondo Mexicano para la Conservación de la Naturaleza, the Government of Mexico SecretarÃa de Hacienda y Crédito Público CONANP -Comisión Nacional de áreas Naturales Protegidas, SecretarÃa de Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales (Semarnat), and partners will boost #ClimateAction in one of the country's most ecologically vital regions. Watch to learn more about this project approved at #GCFB41: https://g.cf/sap049 This project was developed with the support of GCF's Project Preparation Facility and Readiness Programme. Part of its co-financing comes from the Global Biodiversity Framework Fund (GBFF), making this the first GCF co-financed project with GBFF. Global Environment Facility Marc Kristof Dumas-Johansen

Dive into the waters of the Galápagos Archipelago to swim alongside the marine iguana. #WorldWildlifeDay This is the only lizard in the world with the ability to swim. And this comes in handy as they dive to forage for algae, which makes up most of their diet. Marine iguanas depend on healthy ecosystems to survive, yet climate change, invasive species, and habitat destruction are putting them at risk. Conservación Internacional Ecuador works to help protect the Galápagos so that it can sustain marine life, support local communities, and preserves this global biodiversity hotspot.

This #FlashbackFriday, we are looking back at an incredible milestone! Funded by the Global Environment Facility, the Strengthening and Sustaining the Coastal Resource and Fisheries Management in the Leyte Gulf project is dedicated to improving coastal fisheries management and conserving the region's globally significant biodiversity. ?? Through Rare's Fish Forever program, this week-long project launch and boot camp exhibited: - In-depth training sessions on Fish Forever Essentials, behavior adoption, and community-led fisheries management. - The official project launch, where 10 municipal mayors signed a memorandum with Rare Philippines, committing to sustainable coastal resource management and joining the Coastal 500 network. - Stakeholder commitment at all levels, from local fishers to national agencies, ensuring a united front in protecting marine ecosystems. The boot camp laid a solid foundation for the project, setting the stage for long-term impact by addressing the direct drivers to protect habitats while enhancing financial sustainability and effective management. This initiative is a testament to what's possible when communities, policymakers, and organizations work together toward sustainable and resilient coastal ecosystems! #sustainable #fisheries #coastalconservation #leytegulf #fishforever

Protecting #biodiversity is a key priority for the Dominican Republic. One way the Global Environment Facility contributes to the Caribbean nation's conservation efforts is as a donor to the Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund. CEPF supports civil society to conserve the world's biodiversity hotspots. The GEF has been a member of this partnership from CEPF's inception 25 years ago. ? Now the GEF, Conservation International and CEPF are building on this long-standing collaboration through the recent expansion of GEF SGP. With Conservation International becoming during GEF-8 an SGP implementing entity (along with FAO and UNDP), CEPF is providing a delivery mechanism in five countries under GEF-8 and hopefully many more under #GEF9 to get SGP funds into the hands of civil society organizations for community-driven conservation and sustainable development.

Exciting News for Forest Conservation! Conservation International is thrilled to celebrate the endorsement of the Guinean Forests Integrated Program (GFIP)—a milestone in protecting one of the world’s most biodiverse and threatened ecosystems! A part of the Global Environment Facility’s Amazon, Congo, and Critical Forest Biomes Integrated Program, this initiative will drive regional collaboration in West Africa’s upper Guinean Forests, implementing innovative financing and policy coherence to tackle deforestation unsustainable land use and biodiversity loss. Through technical support, capacity building, and transboundary cooperation, Conservation International and BirdLife International will lead the Regional Coordination of the Upper Guinean Forests Program, strengthening forest governance across #Guinea, #GuineaBissau, #Liberia, #SierraLeone, and #Togo. The Guinean Forests of West Africa are home to an estimated 390 terrestrial species, representing more than 25% of the roughly 1,100 mammal species found in Africa. Almost 30% of the 269 amphibian species in this hotspot are threatened due to habitat loss/degradation resulting from logging and agricultural expansion. Protecting the Guinean Forests of West Africa is not only about conserving biodiversity—it is about securing the livelihoods of over 200 million people who rely on these ecosystems for food, water, and economic stability. By fostering sustainable land use and regional cooperation, the Guinean Forests Integrated Program will help safeguard this vital biome for generations.
