Exciting news from Arizona State University! Crystal Sonic, an ASU startup, has secured first place and a $25,000 prize at the 2024 Natcast Startup Pitch Competition held during the NSTC Symposium and Microelectronics Commons Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C. ???
Crystal Sonic, co-founded by ASU Professor of Electrical Engineering Dr. Mariana Bertoni and led by CEO and co-founder Dr. Arno Merkle, is revolutionizing the semiconductor industry with its groundbreaking acoustic technology. The company’s innovation reduces material waste by enabling thin device lift-off and substrate reuse, paving the way for sustainable and cost-efficient semiconductor manufacturing.
“Winning the pitch competition at the NSTC Symposium is an incredible honor for Crystal Sonic. The positive recognition validates the critical need in the industry to lower costs and reduce waste for next-generation semiconductors toward sustainable manufacturing,” said Dr. Merkle.
Innovative acoustic technology: Crystal Sonic’s “acoustic scalpel” reduces waste by precisely cutting and lifting silicon wafers, addressing one of the largest costs in semiconductor production—material waste. ? Repeat Success: Earlier this year, the startup also won $250,000 at the 2024 Lam Capital Venture Competition, further solidifying its position as a leader in sustainable semiconductor solutions. ? Academic Roots: The technology originated from Dr. Bertoni’s research at ASU’s School of Electrical, Computer and Energy Engineering, showcasing the power of university-driven innovation.
Crystal Sonic is scaling its operations to handle 6-inch and 8-inch wafers, a significant step toward broader adoption of its technology. With the semiconductor industry booming in Arizona, bolstered by the CHIPS and Science Act’s $52.7 billion investment, the startup is poised to become a major player in transforming how semiconductors are produced.
Dr. Bertoni highlights, “Arizona’s commitment to the semiconductor industry has connected us to incredible resources, opening doors for innovation and growth.”
Congratulations to Crystal Sonic for driving innovation and sustainability in semiconductor manufacturing! ???
