HonorHealth Research Institute today announced the opening of its new $7 million Center for Translational Science laboratory in the heart of the Phoenix Bioscience Core (PBC), a 30-acre downtown campus that is home to dozens of biotech businesses and includes branches of all three Arizona public research universities.? ? This laboratory, which includes lab bays, a tissue culture room and faculty office space, is the first significant physical footprint of the Center for Translational Science, whose goal is to take scientific breakthroughs at the HonorHealth Research Institute and translate them into new devices, drugs and preventative measures that will improve the lives of patients.? ? “Not only does this laboratory deepen our commitment to translational science and innovation, but its strategic location on the downtown bioscience campus is key to development of our collaborations with Arizona State University, the University of Arizona, and other public and private institutes and businesses,” said Mark Slater, Ph.D., HonorHealth Vice President of Research and CEO of HonorHealth Research Institute.? ? “It’s a part of the overall strategy of HonorHealth to reach out and have a presence across Maricopa County as we help Arizona realize its dream of being a national and international biotech leader, helping drive both economic and clinical benefits,” Dr. Slater said. Crystal Sonic, co-founded by ASU Professor of Electrical Engineering Dr. Mariana Bertoni and led by CEO and co-founder Dr. Arno Merkle, is revolutionizing the semiconductor industry with its groundbreaking acoustic technology. The company’s innovation reduces material waste by enabling thin device lift-off and substrate reuse, paving the way for sustainable and cost-efficient semiconductor manufacturing. “Winning the pitch competition at the NSTC Symposium is an incredible honor for Crystal Sonic. The positive recognition validates the critical need in the industry to lower costs and reduce waste for next-generation semiconductors toward sustainable manufacturing,” said Dr. Merkle. Last night Anchor Ventures hosted “Resources to Build Your Life Sciences Company in the Baltimore Region” and delved into the latest resources and initiatives driving technology development in our region. Our panelists George Davis, Elaine Haynes, and Abi Kulshreshtha shared insights on innovative programs like Connect Labs by Wexford Baltimore, a state-of-the-art lab and innovation space at University of Maryland BioPark. A special highlight was the hard-hat tour of Connect Labs Baltimore, led by the UM BioPark team and Wexford Science + Technology, at 4MLK.
