A wonderful testimony on the power of innovation and philanthropy coming together to create patient impact! ? “It’s crucial to move the field of cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery forward and any innovation that fixes a complex problem - it makes the lives of people better," remarks Dr. Navia, a renowned cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon, inventor, and Vice Chief of the Heart, Vascular & Thoracic Institute at Cleveland Clinic in Florida. ? Dr. Navia and Samir Kapadia, MD, collaborated with Cleveland Clinic Innovations to create Mitria Medical’s Subvalvular Spacer?, a nitinol braid designed to sit at the hinge of the posterior leaflet of the heart with top aspect sitting on the atrial side for anchoring, and the bottom (larger) aspect sitting under the leaflet to provide broad support to the displaced leaflet and associated subvalvular apparatus moving them anteriorly to restore coaptation and reduce mitral regurgitation. Mitral regurgitation is the most common valve disease worldwide. ? Even when he’s not physically in the operating room, Jose Navia, MD, is still mentally scrubbed in and looking for new ways to enhance the heart health of his patients. “I come to work every day thinking of ideas on how to improve the lives of my patients,” says Dr. Navia, a renowned cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon and Vice Chief of the Heart, Vascular & Thoracic Institute at Cleveland Clinic in Florida. “It's so important for the physician to improve the patient’s quality of life and prolong their life.” Thanks to funding from a Catalyst Grant, Dr. Navia has developed a device aimed at treating dilated cardiomyopathy, a heart condition that stretches out your heart muscle, becoming abnormally large. It starts in the left ventricle, the heart’s main pumping chamber, and weakens blood flow to the rest of your body. Alongside a team of engineers and researchers, Dr. Navia is developing a transcatheter device intended to reduce the size of the heart in patients with this condition. What if autism could be identified much earlier? Autism Eyes is turning this possibility into reality. By using eye-tracking technology, it analyzes how individuals focus on images, potentially closing the critical diagnostic gap and enabling earlier intervention. This innovation, developed at Cleveland Clinic with philanthropic support, was created through a strong partnership between our Research, Philanthropy, and Innovations teams. In April 2024, Autism Eyes was acquired by Floreo, a leader in virtual reality tools for behavioral health. The acquisition will integrate this technology into VR platforms used in schools, pediatric offices, and homes, expanding its reach to more families in need of early diagnosis and support. This achievement shows the powerful impact that research, philanthropy, and innovation can have on improving healthcare outcomes for families. #Autism #Innovation #HealthcareTechnology #Philanthropy #EarlyDiagnosis #Innovation #HealthcareInnovation
