Our public lands need us now more than ever. Rangers, park staff, and stewards have always been the backbone of our public lands—they maintain trails, care for facilities, and clean up after visitors. But recent cuts mean fewer hands to protect our coastlines. Without them, our coastal ecosystems are at greater risk. The Leave No Trace principles empower every visitor to help protect our public lands: ? Know Before You Go – Plan ahead! Bring reusable items, check local rules, and pack out all trash. ?? Trash Your Trash – If a bin is full, take it with you. Overflowing cans harm wildlife and pollute the environment. And don’t forget—fishing lines belong in designated disposal bins. ?? Dispose of Waste Properly – Restrooms exist for a reason! Human and pet waste don’t belong outdoors. Diapers, too—pack them out and dispose of them in a trash can. ?? Respect Coastal Communities – Keep noise levels down, yield to others, and reduce your impact. Many small coastal towns struggle to manage visitor impact—so let’s help by leaving places cleaner than we found them. Want to go the extra mile? Create a Cleaner and Healthier California Coast By Practicing Leave No Trace
关于我们
There is no place on Earth like the Northern California Coast. Whether this is your hundredth visit or your first time (welcome!), you will experience something incredible. You may not realize this, but you are essential to protecting this unique place. When we visit coastal areas, we often don’t come empty-handed. All of our single-use trash items add up very quickly. Each year, tens of thousands of pounds of litter are left behind on the California coastline, causing dire ecological damage. The Cleaner California Coast initiative is managed by the Environmental Action Committee of West Marin (EAC) in partnership with Leave No Trace, Marin County Parks, Sonoma County Tourism, Sonoma County Regional Parks, California State Parks, the National Park Service, federally and non-federally recognized tribes, Marin Convention and Visitors Bureau, and Visit Mendocino.

Litter Bugs Me is almost here! Join us March 21-22, 2025, to help clean up coastal Marin roadways before the Department of Public Works begins the mowing season. Picking up litter and recyclables before mowing prevents trash from being shredded and broadcast across a larger area, resulting in a much more difficult cleanup. Trash can harm wildlife and humans. By working together and removing litter twice a year, we can prevent it from building up and breaking down into micro-plastics that pollute our Tomales Bay and Pacific watersheds. Sign up through the Calendar link in bio or https://lnkd.in/gkjbKmwe Cleaner California Coast is dedicated to promoting Leave No Trace's seven principles, and our biannual partnership with the Environmental Action Committee of West Marin (EAC) provides us with opportunities to be a collaborative partner that role models how the Litter Bugs Me Clean-Up aligns with our Cleaner California Coast principles. Know Before You Go, Trash Your Trash, What to do with Poop, and Be Considerate of Coastal Communities. Let’s work together to Leave No Trace and protect West Marin’s coastal ecosystems! #SpringLitterBugsMe #LitterBugsMe #ProtectOurCoast #WestMarin #PointReyes #Olema #Bolinas #StinsonBeach #LeaveNoTrace #CleanerCaliforniaCoast #CleanerCoast #ProtectWildlife #CaliforniaCoast #Mendocino #Marin #Sonoma #MendocinoCounty #MarinCounty #SonomaCounty #California #CoastalCommunities #CostaDeCalifornia #CondadoDeMendocino #CondadoDeMarin #CondadoDeSonoma #ComunidadesCosteras #VidaSostenible #ProtegeNuestrasPlayas #LimpiezaDePlayas #NoDejeRastro

Loose plastic bottle caps are one of the top three most common litter items on California beaches. They pollute our ocean, harm wildlife, and contribute to the growing microplastic crisis. That’s why Senate Bill 45 is a game-changer! By 2027, this bill would require plastic bottle caps to stay attached to bottles, preventing them from becoming pollution. This simple step aligns with what’s already law in the EU and could dramatically cut down on the 44 million pounds of plastic caps generated in California each year. ?? Why does this matter? ?? Prevents litter – Loose caps too often end up in our oceans, harming marine life. ?? Protects wildlife – Sea turtles, birds, and other animals mistake caps for food, leading to choking and poisoning. ?? Improves recycling – Keeping caps attached ensures they get properly recycled instead of ending up in landfills or the environment. We know that every small action adds up. Whether it’s tethering bottle caps, packing out our trash, or reducing plastic use, we all play a part in keeping our coastline pristine. Let’s push for smarter solutions to plastic pollution and protect our beaches, oceans, and wildlife for generations to come. What do you think about SB 45? Drop your thoughts below! ???? Black communities have long led the fight for environmental justice—advocating for clean air, safe water, and green spaces. Yet, systemic barriers have often silenced these voices, even as pollution and climate change hit communities of color hardest. This month (and every month), we recognize the power of Black leadership in protecting our planet and uplifting communities. Meet a few people leading the way: ?? Leah Thomas – Founder of Intersectional Environmentalist, Leah is leading the charge for a sustainability movement that actually reflects the people it impacts. Her book, The Intersectional Environmentalist, explains why environmentalism and social justice are deeply connected. ?? Dr. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson – A marine biologist and policy expert, Dr. Johnson co-founded the Urban Ocean Lab, a think tank focused on developing climate change solutions for coastal cities. She emphasizes the importance of ocean conservation and environmental justice. ?? Dr. Robert Bullard – Often called the father of environmental justice, Dr. Bullard’s research in the 1980s exposed how landfills, toxic waste sites, and industrial pollution were disproportionately placed in Black communities. His work continues through the Bullard Center for Environmental and Climate Justice, pushing for policies that protect communities. We know protecting coastal communities means recognizing how environmental issues intersect with social justice. Let’s celebrate Black environmentalists, learn from the past, and create a future where every voice is heard. Celebrate by shouting out Black leaders in your community who inspire change and deserve recognition. Drop their names in the comments! #BlackExcellence #EnvironmentalJustice #BlackHistoryMonth #LeaveNoTrace #CleanerCaliforniaCoast #CleanerCoast #CaliforniaCoast #Mendocino #Marin #Sonoma #MendocinoCounty #MarinCounty #SonomaCounty #California #CoastalCommunities

Earlier this month, we had an amazing time at the Crab Feed hosted by West Marin Inverness School PTSA! Cleaner California Coast was proud to sponsor this zero-waste community celebration in collaboration with the?West Marin Food Systems?group and many other dedicated partners. What made this event special? ? Reusable dishware & zero-waste commitment. ? Aligned with Marin’s Reusable Foodware Ordinance & California’s SB 1383. ? The only waste? Crab shells, a little pasta & salad, plus recycling! ? All of the donors. ? The families and SUSD staff who worked collaboratively to facilitate the event. ? A true Leave No Trace gathering! For over 20 years, Shoreline Unified School District & West Marin School have been champions of zero-waste events, leading by example. We’re excited to see the Community Events Library, a reusable dishwear collection, move to the WMS campus, continuing this incredible tradition! ?? By choosing sustainability, we protect our oceans and bays, ensuring future generations can enjoy crabs, oysters, mussels & seafood. Every small choice makes a big impact!
