BECAUSE A THRIVING DEMOCRACY DEPENDS UPON OUR ABILITY TO TALK TO EACH OTHER

关于我们

If ever there were a need for constructive, civil dialogue in America, it is now. The 2024 presidential election cycle is in in full swing, further widening the chasm that separates us along political and ideological lines, and threatening our ability to solve significant challenges facing our country. It will take all of us to engage in the democratic process to keep our republic healthy and on course. But how? Where do we go to listen, learn, engage, and, yes — disagree, without fear of judgment? Without being demonized? Hosted by multiple Presidential Library Foundations and policy institutes, the Civil Dialogues initiative seeks to create that safe space for community conversation on some of the important topics of the day. At each town hall, a moderator guides a panel of subject experts, not elected officials, on the topic at hand, and engages audience members in questions and conversation with the panelists. Each attendee should walk away with a better understanding of the topic’s nuances while feeling seen, heard, and empowered to continue dialogue. Follow up will include tools to have civil conversations and opportunities to stay involved with the initiative.

"My wife has been stressed out since the election, but tonight's dialogue calmed her down and gave her hope.” Just one comment from nearly 300 Americans who joined us in person and online for last Monday’s Civil Dialogues town hall, “The Election Is Over: Let’s Talk”. By the end of the evening at the Baker Institute Center for the United States and Mexico, the energy in the room had clearly shifted.?The initial tension and reticence to speak was replaced by a collective exhale and willingness to engage. Providing a safe space and tools to navigate these turbulent times is what Civil Dialogues is all about. In 2025, we will continue traveling the country to have these important conversations. Meantime, check the comments for a link to watch “The Election Is Over” and another link to partner with us and host an event. Co-founder, Jean Becker and I are so thankful for the opportunity to do this work and for the growing community we are building. Now and always, we’re #inthistogether

  • As Americans prepare for a second Trump presidency, there is elation on one side, despair on the other. Yet, we remain family, friends, colleagues — and somehow we must find a way to move forward together. At Civil Dialogues, we believe a good first step is simply talking and listening to each other, as difficult as that might be given our deep divides and charged emotions that are still raw. So please join us for a national town hall on Monday, November 18th from 5-7pm CST, either in person or online. What are you thinking and feeling??What questions do you have about specific issues and policies likely to be enacted by the new administration? We aim to create a safe space for constructive, civil dialogue. Let’s all take a deep breath and figure out a way #forward. As Americans head to the polls today, we are letting our voices be heard. And as we hold our collective breath in anticipation of the outcome, I have a question for you: How will you continue to raise your voice as a participant in our fragile #democracy? I was the first one in line to vote this morning.?It felt so good to finally make my voice heard after this never-ending election cycle that has further divided us along political lines. As of this writing, more than 14 million Americans have already voted early. That gives me #hope. Because when we are all engaged in making our #democracy work, we have a chance at making it last. Another important part of engaging in democracy is figuring out how to talk to each other when we don’t agree. That’s the work we do at Civil Dialogues.?And we are proud to partner with and promote others who are also doing the work of bringing us together as Americans. One of the most impactful organizations in this space is BridgeUSA, founded by now 24 year-old Manu Meel when he was a freshman at UC Berkley. It is now on 63 college campuses and 17 high school campuses in 39 states. I’ve interviewed Manu twice on Our Voices Matter, most recently in January as this election year began. It’s one of my favorite conversations in more than five years of hosting the podcast. So much of what he had to say is relevant to where we are now, but despite our country's divisions, this conversation will leave you with hope.??And I’ll bet you could use some of that right about now. So, take a moment to watch or listen. And don’t forget to vote.?Your voice matters. https://lnkd.in/gTqrtsj3

  • Have you ever considered running for office, or pursuing any type of public service? The reality is, our democracy depends on good people choosing to serve, yet many choose not to. Why is that? And how can we reform our system to attract more Americans to step up in service of our country? Earlier this week, Civil Dialogues explored that important topic in the 6th of our ongoing series of town halls in partnership with presidential library foundations. Secretary Andy Card, CEO of the George & Barbara Bush Foundation welcomed nearly 200 attendees to the new 4141 Locomotive Pavilion adjacent to the Bush Library in College Station, TX. Huge thanks to Civil Dialogues co-founder, Jean Becker, for providing much needed historical background, and our panelists, Rob Altman II, David Fujimoto, Gracie McMinn and Peyton McGuire for an engaging, thoughtful conversation that explored multiple perspectives. Would love to hear your thoughts. Will you consider running for any type of public office? Why or why not?

  • "With the time on earth I have remaining, I will do all I can to encourage our fellow citizens to return to the civility we once enjoyed. Yes, we disagreed on many things and should continue to do so— but without animus. My profound hope and prayer for our country is that we can return to being a people and country the world respects." The words of 100 year-old Judge William Webster in a letter to Members of Congress, enclosed in a book authored by my Civil Dialogues partner, Jean Becker. What an honor to accompany Jean to The Hill yesterday and meet this American icon as he gifted a copy of her book, "Character Matters...and Other Life Lessons from George H.W. Bush" to all 535 Members. Yes, character matters. And so does civil dialogue. #inthistogether #civility https://civildialogues.us/

One of America’s finest public servants, Judge William Webster, former Director of the FBI and CIA, yesterday presented a bipartisan group of Members of Congress with copies of “Character Matters…and Other Life Lessons from George H.W. Bush." Picture #1: Judge Webster and his wife Lynda being greeted by Senator Susan Collins (R-ME) Picture #2: Senator Collins showing the Websters a picture of her and President George H.W. Bush in Kennebunkport Picture #3: Judge Webster with Senator Collins (R-ME), Senator Mark Kelly (D-AZ) and Author Jean Becker Picture #4: Judge Webster with Chairman Michael McCaul (R-TX) and Ranking Member Gregory Meeks (D-NY) of the House Foreign Affairs Committee? Judge Webster, now 100 years old, is giving every member of Congress a copy of this book, written by President Bush’s post presidency chief of staff, Jean Becker. As Judge Webster says in his letter to Members of Congress which accompanies the book, “I appeal to you as a leader of our country to do all you can to lead by example and to show others that collaboration, cooperation, and yes, character does matter in what we do as a nation.”

Civil Dialogues was honored to host our first town hall on energy at the opening ceremonies of Houston Energy and Climate Week on September 9, 2024. "We need to fight the changing climate, not each other.?We respect democracy, civil dialogue, diverse ideas, productivity, and pragmatism.?" That part of HECW's Unity Commitment, guiding the week's events, is in perfect alignment with the mission of Civil Dialogues and this podcast. And so is the ethos of this week's guest, Theo E.J. Wilson, climate activist, actor, entrepreneur, poet, and host of "I Was There" on the History Channel. His TEDX on race in America has been viewed 18 million times. After meeting and interviewing him on the panel, I needed more time to explore his provocative perspectives. So I invited him to keep the conversation going and share it with all of you. From climate justice to going undercover in the Alt-Right movement to the art of having a civil dialogue, nothing was off limits. This is one you don't want to miss. #newepisode https://lnkd.in/gD9ar3jK
