Last week, about 25 ChristianaCare caregivers gathered for our latest Thank You Project event, a chance to reflect on the moments that remind us why we do this work. In summer 2023, Himani Divatia, DO, then associate program director of ChristianaCare’s Med-Peds residency program and Medical Director of Patient Experience, was at a pool party with her family and Med-Peds colleagues when her husband, Mrugesh Patel, lost consciousness in the water. In an instant, friends and colleagues became first responders, getting him to ChristianaCare’s Surgical Critical Care Unit. For five days, a broad team of caregivers — including ICU physicians, nurses and specialists — cared for him as they would for any patient, but with the added weight of knowing he was the cherished husband of their mentor and friend. At the event, caregivers reunited with Patel and Divatia, sharing stories of that day and the bonds that carried them through. “We were in the right place,” Divatia said. “I didn’t have to make big decisions alone — we trusted in the excellence and love around us. I would choose you again and again to take care of my family.” Do you have a Thank You Project story? Contact Patient Experience at 302-733-1379 or email Natalie Dyke at [email protected].

Mentorship matters! Huge shoutout to one of my fabulous mentors and sister Marshala Lee-McCall, MD, MPH, FAAFP. You don’t have to do hard things alone ??
Dr. Kristyn Mitchell, a first-year OB-GYN resident at ChristianaCare, knows the power of mentorship and perseverance in medicine. As a child, she shadowed her mother, a clinical nurse specialist at ChristianaCare, and was captivated by the ICU. Though she once doubted whether she could become a doctor, mentors like Marshala Lee-McCall, MD, MPH, FAAFP helped her see her potential. "My mentors believed in me, and eventually, I believed in myself,” she told students at ChristianaCare’s Underrepresented in Medicine Pre-Health Symposium. Now, as a physician, Mitchell finds fulfillment in guiding expectant mothers through childbirth. "It’s about keeping moms calm and making sure they feel empowered during their delivery," she said. "My number one priority is healthy mom, healthy baby. My job is far from easy, but my patients make it all worth it." Her advice to students: Find your mentors, trust your unique abilities, and stay committed — even when the path isn’t a straight line. Mitchell recently joined Lee-McCall on our For The Love Of Health podcast to discuss the impact of mentorship on equity and representation in healthcare. This week, ChristianaCare hospital, welcomes two new Da Vinci 5 robots to our Wilmington campus. We perform many robotic surgeries and all of our dv5s and Xis are dual console, making it very easy for our residents to get in the game and develop operative autonomy in robotic cases. Breaking in the new bots with a robotic abdominal wall reconstruction by PGY-3 resident, Dr. Lexi Ford and Minimally Invasive Surgery attending, Dr. Santoro. #funatwork #robotsarecool #education #excellence

On Feb. 8th ChristianaCare Institute for Research on Equity and Community Health (iREACH) & ChristianaCare Academic Affairs partnered with Minority Association of Pre-Medical Students (MAPS) at Delaware State University and University of Delaware to host an Underrepresented in Medicine (URM) Pre-Health Symposium with over 100 undergraduate attendees from across the region. The event was designed to provide students with essential resources and information for pursuing careers in health care. More than 50 clinicians, medical faculty, medical students were present and volunteered to support the students. Delaware Governor Matthew Meyer welcomed students with a clear message: Diversity in medicine is critical to reducing health inequities. Meyer assured students that the state is committed to expanding medical education and career pathways for underrepresented students. “You belong here, and we need you here,” Delaware Gov. For a groundbreaking offering in the treatment of substance use disorders, ChristianaCare’s Family Medicine residency program team received a Wellness Hero Award in the 2024 Delaware Lt. Governor’s Wellness Leadership Challenge. ChristianaCare was recognized for creating “a comprehensive program designed to address the pressing need for behavioral health services in Delaware. ChristianaCare’s Family Medicine residency established a substance use disorder treatment program in 2020 to identify and provide targeted substance abuse treatment to patients in need and, importantly, to train future providers in the specific and unique issues that patients with addiction often face in primary care settings.
