With abundant natural resources, a young and growing population, and a resilient spirit, there are many opportunities to expand #Pakistan’s growth and development.?But there are challenges, too. Pakistan is the 5th most populous country in the world with a population that is expected to double by 2050. It is also especially vulnerable to environmental stressors like floods and other crises, which directly impact human health and the country’s #HealthSystem.???? We’re proud to work closely with USAID Pakistan, the Pakistani Government, the private sector, and communities to help to solve these and other critical development challenges every day. This year, we were proud to collaborate with the Systems Thinking Accelerator (SYSTAC) Africa Hub to launch our “Approach for Operationalizing Systems Thinking for Health (ST4H).” A key element of this #HealthSystems strengthening approach is to institutionalize iterative cycles for increased efficiency based on continuously examining, co-creating, and adapting interventions for health system enhancements. ?? Congratulations to our two winning teams for being selected as grant recipients for the 2024 Global Health Supply Chain (GHSC) Research Challenge! All proposals went through an independent review committee comprised of representatives from the Global Health Supply Chain Summit Group, ARC - Africa's Public Health Supply Chain Institution, and Chemonics, who co-sponsored the grant. Thank you to all those who submitted proposals and we look forward to continued partnership with local stakeholders, academics, and #SupplyChain experts around the world in 2025! ?? The first winning team was a group of investigators from #Nigeria, comprised of researchers from Nnamdi Azikiwe University, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), and King Serena Pharmacy. Their research will assess the impact of interventions to improve adverse drug reaction (#ADR) reporting among community pharmacists in Ambara State. ?? The second winner was a group of investigators from #Ghana, comprised of researchers from the University of Ghana, who will assess how social and behavioral factors influence health commodity managers’ #eLMIS utilization and leverage social and behavior change (#SBC) strategies to optimize utilization for efficient supply chain management at all levels of the #health system. The research will be conducted over the next year and final results will be shared at the 2025 Global Health Supply Chain Summit. The USAID Global Health Supply Chain Program-Procurement and Supply Management (GHSC-PSM) project collaborated with People that Deliver to produce a series of four journal articles on #HumanResourcesForHealth in #SupplyChainManagement! The final article in the series, titled “Systems thinking approach to human resources development in public health supply chains,” provides a framework of iterative systems thinking, which centers around three approaches that require equal attention. The first approach focuses on a deeper consideration of the supply chain management labor market and a comprehensive mapping of human resource system requirements. Second, the application of the supply chain management professionalization framework is needed to establish health supply chain management as a recognized profession. Lastly, the application of the human resources for supply chain management theory of change to assess the conditions required to achieve optimal workforce performance at the organizational level. The Ministry of Health in #Rwanda applied these three tools sequentially to evaluate and improve the supply and performance of its health supply chain management workforce. By leveraging digital technologies, health systems can significantly enhance accessibility, affordability, and quality of care, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. ? USAID’s recently released Digital Health Position Paper (2024-2029) is a vital tool for equipping global stakeholders with the strategies, tools, and solutions needed to keep pace with rapid technological advancements. The third of these articles, titled “Applying a theory of change for human resources development in public health supply chains in Rwanda,” was authored by Erin Meier, Andrew N. Brown, Bridget McHenry, Joseph Kabatende, Inès K. Gege Buki, and Joyce Icyimpaye, and originally appeared in the Global Health Science and Practice journal. The article provides a model that enables a systematic process for identifying gaps, developing and prioritizing interventions, and selecting organizational HR indicators to invest in. Practitioners designing and evaluating #SupplyChain workforce interventions should consider applying this methodology to design more effective, theory-driven interventions to improve supply chain workforce performance.
