Check out this week’s #ChemSci Picks by Thomas Basché et al. (Johannes Gutenberg-University Mainz) titled: "Suppressing non-radiative relaxation in a NIR single photon emitter: The impact of deuteration and temperature." In this manuscript, Thomas Basché et al. study the impact of deuteration and temperature on the emission properties of dibenzoterrylene (DBT) by bulk and single molecule spectroscopy. Based on simple photophysical modelling, the authors clarify how internal conversion (IC) affects the single molecule emission rate. It is then shown that deuteration of DBT leads to a concomitant increase of the fluorescence lifetime and quantum yield by up to 60 %. This clear deuterium isotope effect points to a significant contribution of C-H-vibrations in the IC process. The solvent-dependent changes of the IC rate of hydrogenated and deuterated compounds were found to follow the predictions of the energy gap law in the weak coupling limit, supported by the very weak temperature dependence of the IC rate between 5 and 300 K. The authors believe that their results not only shed light onto non-radiative relaxation of a topical polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, but also pave the way to single molecule quantum emitters with high emission yields in the NIR. One of our users has published an awe-inspiring scientific article. Great work, Mariusz Radon!
Check out this week's fantastic #ChemSciPicks titled: "Performance of Quantum Chemistry Methods for Benchmark Set of Spin–State Energetics Derived from Experimental Data of 17 Transition Metal Complexes (SSE17)" by Mariusz Radon, Gabriela Drabik, Maciej Hodorowicz and Janusz Szklarzewicz (Jagiellonian University in Kraków, Poland). This work presented a novel benchmark set of first-row transition metal spin–state energetics, which is derived from experimental data of 17 complexes containing Fe(II), Fe(III), Co(II), Co(III), Mn(II), and Ni(II) with chemically diverse ligands. The estimates of adiabatic or vertical spin–state splittings, which are obtained from spin crossover enthalpies or energies of spin-forbidden absorption bands, suitably back-corrected for the vibrational and environmental effects, are employed as reference values for benchmarking density functional theory (DFT) and wave function methods.
