The CIM | Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum's Capital Projects Symposium in Toronto, Canada, came to a successful close last week, leaving us inspired by the valuable discussions about the evolution of our industry and technical advancements in mining. DRA Global has proudly supported this symposium over the years, and we were honoured to have our experts take to the stage this year: ?? JC Heslinga, Executive Vice President - Global Project Excellence, shared his insights about how Operational Readiness and Specialised Work and Training have been key drivers in the success of large projects. ?? Vikram Jayaraman, Senior Vice President - NAMER Operations and Advisory, contributed his expertise by chairing a pivotal session: project financing, addressing “Whose money to use and how to get it,” and participating in the leveraging dynamic discounted cash flow and real options to assess the value and risk of mining investments presentation. As a leading engineering, project delivery and operations management group, we remain committed to driving innovation and excellence in the mining sector.?Thank you to all attendees, speakers, and organisers for making this event a tremendous success!

It was an action-packed couple of days at the Capital Projects Symposium this week! Kudos to CIM | Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum for running an excellent event with insightful presentations and ample networking opportunities. ?? A few takeaways below: ?? There’s huge potential to boost project delivery and tech adoption in mining. Right now, 80% of mining projects run over budget. We can definitely make strides there. ??Effective capital project management is only going to become more critical with CAPEX expected to grow 6% YoY for the next decade in the mining sector. ??There is hope! Innovations in technology (including Contruent ??) and smarter project delivery models are driving real collaboration and transparency, giving teams the tools to make better decisions across the project lifecycle. If you're in mining project delivery, next year's event is a must. In the meantime, take a look at Contruent’s work in the mining space below—and feel free to reach out with any questions. https://lnkd.in/gEV_pQzy

It was a refreshing take to come back into the mining sector again - it's certainly been awhile. As a first time attendee at the CIM | Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum Capital Projects Symposium, the greater family of companies (Flatiron Construction, Dragados Canada, Inc. and Thiess) got to come together as one company, one team and certainly stronger together. Shaun Barker, Head of Technical Services moderated the session: Study Development and Portfolio Management "Rocks to Riches" and Ural Yal, Executive Vice President was part of an impressive panel of speakers where he spoke candidly on a "Contractor’s Perspective on Best Practices in Alternative Contract Delivery Methods and Financing Models used in the Heavy Civil Construction Industry". Some of the themes that seemed to resonate throughout that day were to engage a partner early, get friendly with your risk register as one of the most important documents throughout the life of the project, and that there's no such thing as too much geotechnical investigation. Also a special thanks to the CIM organizers James Connolly and @MarieTota for organizing a balanced program that welcomed new and topical themes. Discover how a mining project in Valle, Brazil, leveraged digital engineering to achieve significant cost savings and productivity gains. Flávio Dayrell and Guilherme Castro from EY delved into the implementation of advanced work packaging (AWP), building information modeling (BIM), and geographic information systems (GIS) to extend the life of a 50-year-old site. By overcoming the challenges of a brownfield site, the team utilized innovative technologies such as drone mapping, 4D construction simulations, and AI-powered schedule validation. The result? A projected 5% cost reduction and a 20% increase in productivity. #CPS2024 #CIMacrossCanada #DigitalEngineering #ProjectManagement Capital Projects Symposium

Olga Kovalik, EVP at Vale, delivered a compelling keynote address at Capital Projects Symposium, emphasizing the critical importance of project maturity in the mining sector. "Improving Project Performance in the Mining Industry" highlighted the significant risks associated with advancing immature projects and advocated for early investment in engineering and contractor involvement to mitigate these risks. Kovalik also proposed the establishment of a Chief Project Officer role to strengthen governance and optimize capital allocation. She encouraged the industry to adopt a more pragmatic approach to project decision-making, avoiding emotional attachments and prioritizing objective analysis. By contrasting Western and Chinese approaches to project development, Kovalik emphasized the benefits of early investment in de-risking projects. She argued that such proactive measures can significantly improve project execution, financing outcomes, and overall success. #CPS2024 #CIMacrossCanada #ProjectManagement

Stephen Davy, Vice Chair of Investments at Scotiabank, delivered a keynote address at the Capital Projects Symposium, delving into the intricacies of securing financing for mining ventures in Canada. His presentation, “Current Perspectives on Financing Mining Projects in Canada,” shed light on the evolving landscape of funding options, including equity, private equity, partnerships, and government tax credits, with a particular focus on sustainable projects. Davy highlighted the unique challenges faced by junior mining companies, emphasizing the need for patient capital from investors who can weather market volatility and long-term timelines. He likened the financing process to a complex puzzle, underscoring the importance of strategically aligning diverse funding sources and timing them effectively. While acknowledging the limited availability of government support, Davy expressed optimism about its potential to expand and align with global standards. His insightful presentation provided a comprehensive roadmap for navigating the complexities of Canada’s mining finance landscape. #CPS2024 #CIMacrossCanada #FinancingProjects #Investing

Capital Projects Symposium - 2 quick days, busy with many learnings. A few takeaways (so far): ?? Chronic unease - essential thinking to create a robust safety culture ?? It's not what we mine but how we mine it ?? Why projects fail? - many reasons including not understanding the complexity of engineering ?? Mining innovation - crawl before we walk, walk before we run ?? Collaborative Project Delivery - allows for transparent risk sharing and potential complex project derisking #CPS2024 #CIMacrossCanada
