The most frequently asked question I get from people when I tell them I am in tech is: "Do you think AI will take over the world?", And after attending the "Where AI Meets Women in Tech" event hosted by Ninety One and CAPACITI , I can finally answer and say that AI is not about taking over the world—it’s about empowering us to shape the future. The keynote speaker Ms Callan Abrahams provided a powerful and nuanced perspective on the role of AI in our lives. She emphasized that AI is a tool, not a force of its own, and its impact depends entirely on how we design, deploy, and govern it. One of the most inspiring aspects of the event was the focus on diversity and inclusion in AI development. The speaker highlighted how women and underrepresented groups are critical to ensuring that AI systems are equitable, ethical, and beneficial for all. We also had a group of young women called the The PowerPuffIT Girls , who were very inspirational as they shared their journey in IT and how being a part of CAPACITI has kicked started their careers and built their confidence. So, the next time someone asks me if AI will take over the world, I’ll confidently say: "No, but it will transform it—and it’s up to us to ensure that transformation is for the better."

Since launching our tech career accelerator in Gqeberha, CAPACITI has been driving growth—both for young talent and local businesses. Our facility has expanded in just 4 months, from a 10-seater to an 80-seater capacity! We are poised to create even more opportunities for Gqeberha businesses, with access to job-ready tech professionals, leaving business owners the freedom to innovate. "We needed skilled ICT professionals with the right attitude, at the right time - and CAPACITI delivered. Their candidates have been some of the most job-ready graduates we've ever worked with." - Tichaona Mashiri, Founder and MD of DBI Intelligent Technology Group The success of our programmes can be seen by its 100% absorption rate into meaningful employment within local businesses, thus reducing the unemployment rate in the region. More young professionals are currently being equipped with in-demand tech skills, as businesses in Gqeberha increasingly seek top talent to join their teams. By tapping into this skilled workforce, companies are not only strengthening their teams but also lowering recruitment costs, boosting efficiency, and are building a future-ready workforce. With support from the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, Naspers Limited and the National Treasury’s Jobs Fund (Najwah Allie-Edries), we are seeing young professionals build thriving careers without having to leave their communities. On Monday, we had the incredible opportunity to be part of something special— “Where AI Meets Women in Tech: Shaping the Future in Cape Town," co-hosted by Ninety One and CAPACITI. As the PowerPuffIT Girls (Molebaleng Malebaleng, Lethabo Kgwadi, Nolubabalo Maxazana, and Thandokuhle Mandondo) we were honored to take the stage alongside a powerhouse lineup of women who are making waves in AI and technology. It was inspiring to share our experiences, challenges, and hopes for a future where women are not just included in tech but are leading, innovating, and reshaping the industry. Events like this remind us why representation matters. Seeing a room full of women in tech—leaders, innovators, and aspiring changemakers—was a powerful reminder that we are not alone in this journey. From insightful talks to meaningful conversations, the energy in the room was electric, proving that together, we are breaking barriers and paving the way for the next generation of women in technology. A huge thank you to Ninety One, CAPACITI, the incredible speakers, and everyone who made this event possible. This is just the beginning. We’re committed to keeping the momentum going, supporting each other, and ensuring that the future of tech is diverse, inclusive, and equitable. Here’s to going far—together! #WomenInTech #PowerPuffITGirls #AI #DiversityInTech #ShapingTheFuture #TechLeadership #CapeTownTech #InternationalWomensDay

At CAPACITI we've been advocating for inclusivity and diversity for a while now. It's unfortunate that within the tech industry, women are still the minority - but that will soon change! After putting 100 women through an Enabling Women in Tech programme in 2024, we've just launched an all-women cohort training in AI. ? Our partners at Ninety One have also identified the gender gap, as well as the need for top talent trained in AI. We co-hosted an event for women called "Where AI Meets Women in Tech: Shaping the Future". ? Together we explored the intersection between AI, technology, and diversity. Visionary speakers, and an educational panel left the audience feeling inspired. A highlight was an AI demo from the PowerPuff IT girls - a group of 4 CAPACITI alumni who won a hackathon with their innovative AI-led, diverse, EdTech platform, where their prize was a trip to the AfroTech conference in Houston, Texas. ? We are so grateful all of our partners, and to everyone who joined us in championing the voices of women leading the way in AI and technology.?? ? After 7 glorious years with CAPACITI, I am in the final days of handover before I leave for a new position on the 17th March. Many of you who know me well, know that CAPACITI has been my passion and inherently intertwined with who I am. It was a tough decision to make, but my desire to be at the coalface of the challenges youth face in accessing work, alongside an exciting new project has enticed me back into the thick of new innovation! I will be remaining in the ecosystem and expect to continue working with many of you closely, including the CAPACITI Team. To our partners and funders, a deep, heartfelt thank you for all your investment and support of what we have achieved in these years. Over 8000 youth have been given quality education, skills, work experience and professional development. A vast majority of these have gone on to build successful careers in the industry. We could not have achieved this without your dedication and long-term support. To our community that hire CAPACITI Graduates, thank you for your commitment to the next generation, your feedback, collaboration and ongoing support of building tech talent in South Africa. Our youth are talented, brilliant and resilient, causing many of you return time and again to access these amazing young people. I salute you in leading the way. To my fellow change agents and collaborators who operate with such passion in this sometimes-heartbreaking field of youth unemployment, thank you for all the discussions, innovation, ideas and sharing. Let's continue making magic happen together; no one can solve this crisis alone. To my leadership team Chanel Oldfield, Chesarae K Pillay, Kelly Maroon and Nasheeta Du Toit you have been behind me all the way through my demand for excellence, drive to do things better, new ideas, projects, partners and all the changes I have bought in along the way. Chanel, you especially revolutionized what we did from the beginning as my partner in crime. We both lead the charge to grow CAPACITI from an initial team of 7 in a small office in Woodstock, to a workforce that is now nearly 60 strong in 4 different provinces. I know the organisation will be safe in your hands. To the CAPACITI and UVU Africa team, you have been amazing, and I will miss you all dearly. Thank you for all the fun, laughter, collaboration and lives you have changed. You truly are the best. And finally, to our wonderful CAPACITI candidates and alumni, you are the ones that make me get up every day and fight for your better future. You are talented, you are amazing, and you are the future of not just this country, but this continent. Don't ever let anyone say you don't belong or deserve a place at the table. Keep learning, keep growing and keep shining. I am truly humbled by the opportunity and learning I have had at CAPACITI and UVU Africa. Onwards and Upwards!
