I talk to A LOT of recruiters because of my work, and I can tell you that they are OVERWHELMED… And while the flood of newly laid off job applicants is partly responsible, they are also dealing with hr software upgrades and even layoffs at their own employers. They are now tasked with hiring faster with fewer colleagues and WAY more applications. So if they can find a great candidate from a referral, that’s exactly what they are going to do, and who could blame them? Which would you choose, a person who came to you from someone you know and respect, or having to go through the THOUSANDS of resumes from their career site? This week I saw a woman on social media talk about having applied to 900 jobs! Although I didn’t discuss with her, I can almost guarantee that she is only applying on line and not effectively connecting with actual humans who could advise or introduce her to the folks who could hire her. If you apply on line to an employer, that you don’t have a connection with, good luck! You have no more than a 20% chance of even getting an interview. Sometimes you have to stop what’s NOT WORKING and listen to people who know how things work. Jobseekers should be focused on getting in front of people who are working directly with the hiring managers, but not necessarily the hiring managers. We knew this would happen… This week is already starting out a lot quieter than the past two, when so many people were posting jobs lists and companies that were “hiring”. Yes, I’m still seeing people sharing this information and trying to help. And “some” federal workers got their jobs back, but the majority did not. But the thing is, THOUSANDS ARE STILL UNEMPLOYED. It’s not sustainable for everyone to be posting openings on their social media forever. The hr department was already overwhelmed with applicants from layoffs before all of this happened. Jobseekers are applying for jobs that already have 1,000 applicants, and that’s not right. Repeat after me, “posting to your network of 700 connections, is not an effective recruiting strategy”. Because it takes THOUSANDS to see it, just to get 50 actual qualified candidates. People get jobs from NETWORKING, NOT applying on-line. If your organization is recruiting for SCIENTISTS, ENGINEERS, TECHNOLOGISTS OR MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS… Then join us every 1st & 3rd Wednesday at 12pm EST to connect with ACTUAL people looking for their next opportunity.
