Great conversation between my colleague Adam Le and secondaries legend Ian Charles of Arctos at our second annual #NEXUS conference in Orlando, this week. Ian's basic message is painfully simple, in my view, but often people need to change their mindsets to see the obvious: Find a need, serve the need. Clear to me that that mindset is what has made him such a repeatedly successful entrepreneur (which, as he said, is what GPs really are, at bottom). The private equity industry is experiencing a first in its history: real competition for market share. So differentiation will be - already is - a requirement to succeed. Time to reevaluate whether you're strategy fits existing investors' needs, or if you're rather trying to find investors to fit your strategy.
