The MassDEP Brownfields team travels to all four corners of the Commonwealth to share information about brownfields resources. This week, we went to Haverhill to meet with the Merrimack Valley Planning Commission and discuss how our programs can collaborate to advance brownfields projects throughout the region. Many thanks to Abigail Anderson (Statewide Brownfields & EJ Coordinator), and the DEP Northeast Regional Office staff who provided key insights and site-specific information: Leticia Ruiz-Boyle, Joanne Fagan & Erik Johnson. #Brownfields #Assessment #Redevelopment #CommunityBenefits

The Brownfields Program, as part of the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP), helps with the reuse of abandoned or under-used land. These properties are often polluted. The cleanup and reuse of the properties improves public health, the environment and the economy.

US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) #Brownfields resources are key for the redevelopment of under utilized and contaminated sites in every state. Brownfields benefits go to small towns and big cities. UConn Technical Assistance to Brownfields is an excellent technical resource for people who could use an expert at their side as they work on grant applications and to better understand potential Brownfields in their communities. MassDEP is glad to work with the TAB Program as well as our Regional Planning Agencies to bring Brownfields support to the 351 municipalities in the Commonwealth.
Let’s take a look at our grant support for the FY25 EPA Brownfield Grant Reviews ???- UConn TAB provided full grant reviews to a total of?37 applicants across New England! ? ???- UConn TAB’s Fall Municipal Assistance Program (MAP) supported?12 communities, assisting them with grant reviews. ? ???-?73%?of the grant reviews supported by UConn TAB supported CEJST-designated environmental justice communities. We continue to champion equity and inclusion throughout New England. ? We wish all the FY25 applicants' luck as we await the announcement in Summer 2025.
