Keel Laying Ceremony for the 60th Mersey Ferry - The Royal Daffodil.
Today, our Managing Director, Martin Sealeaf, had the privilege of attending the keel laying ceremony of the 60th Mersey Ferry (builder’s hull no. 1395) at Cammell Laird.
This significant moment marks six decades since the last Mersey Ferry was built at Cammell Laird Shiprepairers & Shipbuilders Limited Laird, a landmark in maritime history.
The vessel, designed by the in-house Cammell Laird workforce and apprentices, is the 1395th ship to be built at this historic facility. We are proud that Seaking has been awarded the full electrical portion of this pioneering project. It was fantastic to hear David Mc Ginley, CEO of APCL Group, mention Seaking in his speech today.
The new ferry is a state-of-the-art vessel that embodies cutting-edge green technology. It features an Azi-pull propeller system for fuel reduction, a diesel-electric hybrid-ready propulsion system, and the potential for future conversion to full electric propulsion as the technology evolves. Additionally, it will be equipped with an exhaust after-treatment system designed to exceed current UK and international emissions standards, significantly reducing harmful emissions.
Cammell Laird’s longstanding connection with the Mersey Ferries spans back to 1836, having built 15 of these iconic vessels. The company continues to play a pivotal role in the UK's shipbuilding industry, with a 200-year legacy, 90 acres of land, 4 dry docks, and one of Europe’s largest modular construction facilities.
We are honoured to be a part of this remarkable journey and contribute to the next chapter of the Mersey Ferries.
