Heading to London? Keep a firm grip on your phone - and an eye out for those super-fast Chinese-made electric bikes. Mobile phone thefts surged 25% to about 70,000 in the British capital in the 12 months to the end of February. Tell me about it: I was one of the victims. Love or hate Trump, you have to give him credit for his ability to tap into what his voters want to hear. But his trade policies may turn out to be the exception. Clive Crook has some thoughts on how and why he's making a bewildering error on the politics of trade: “'America First' as the guiding principle of foreign and economic policy does have a whiff of common sense. But few voters will see waging trade war as the common-sense way to go about it. Businesses are already facing higher costs, cutting their earnings forecasts and rethinking their investments. The stock market has slumped and investors fear worse is to come. Inflation is inching back up, expected inflation has surged and consumer confidence has turned down as households ponder what lies ahead." #trade #tariffs #Trump

President Trump blamed the Department of Education and wokeism for declines in student achievement but has no plan to improve it. That's an opening for Democrats to promote what they know is needed. My column. Gift link: https://lnkd.in/e2zYdFBb via @opinion

Mobile-phone theft is an increasingly major problem in London, supercharged by powerful Chinese-made electric bikes and the tempting target of pedestrians buried in their screens. Politicians have woken up to the damage this is doing to the capital’s image as an investment and tourist destination. My column for Bloomberg Opinion:

Trump thinks his tariffs will bring back manufacturing —and thus, create more jobs for men. He's wrong. Economist Allison Schrager explains what will actually help: https://lnkd.in/eyneN3uJ

President Donald Trump's new executive order to use emergency powers to boost critical minerals production doesn't mention coal. But it is lurking there between the lines. Trump, and his Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, who chairs the panel that gets to decide which elements count as critical, are big fans of coal. They are in a dwindling minority, as the fossil fuel has lost ground in US power generation over the past two decades, especially to cheap shale gas. I expect coal will make it into Burgum's list of critical minerals despite the fall in demand, lack of dependency on imports (especially from China) and more-than-adequate stockpiles relative to consumption at power plants. The EO points to federal aid for a politically favored fuel being justified on the grounds of AI dominance - a bizarre marriage of 19th century technology with 21st century aspirations, via 20th century legislation. London’s Heathrow is providing a real-life lesson of what happens when Murphy’s Law collides with a single point of failure, says Javier Blas: utter chaos. A fire erupted at a major electrical substation on Thursday night, triggering a loss of power across a large area. By Friday morning, the airport — Europe’s busiest, and the world’s fourth most active travel hub — had shut down completely for the day, the UK’s worst air travel disruption in years. The closure suggests not paying for adequate back-up systems is a false #economy. Read the full column, no paywall: https://lnkd.in/e_M8ZzfD
