The Black Principals Network envisions a nation where Black children, Black principals, and Black communities flourish.

The mission of the Black Principals Network is to co-create a restorative community for Black principals through collective and individual programming focused on self-care, sustainability, and liberation through collective problem-solving, self-discovery, and access to high quality resources. Launched by Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Philanthropies, the Black Principals Network was designed to curate space for black principals from across the country in pursuit of community, professional growth, and collective liberation. Since the program’s original launch in 2021, more than 350 principals have joined the online platform, participating in shared learning and community building. As the brainchild of Schusterman’s Education Grantmaking team Heather Harding, Senior Director and Cheryl Thompson, Director, the hope since inception has been that BPN would find a home with an aligned organization.

    We're presenting at #BMEC2024! In recent years, The Leadership Academy and Surge Institute each separately launched affinity spaces for principals of color. In this conversation, you will hear anecdotal personal stories as well as the results of an external evaluation conducted on their programs that explains the impact of principal affinity groups and what aspects of a community is important for leaders to receive to thrive in the role.     We have kicked off recruitment for The Leadership Collaborative 2025 (TLC25) cohort! What is TLC? The Leadership Collaborative is an intimate cohort immersive learning experience created out of feedback from Black Principals Network members. While gathering data about what school leaders really need during this time, the repeat request was for an opportunity for leaders who share collective cultural backgrounds, experiences, and goals across the nation to gather, connect, innovate, and share solution-based strategies while building community.     When I think about Principal Appreciation Month—my first thought is about The Leadership Collaborative, the fellowship of the Black Principals Network Last year was a gut wrenching year for lots of reasons. Although I’d been leading schools and leading in my district for a while, there’s just nothing like the principal seat. You can’t explain it to anyone, you just have to sit in it. So when I learned about this fellowship (powered by Surge Institute) I prayed to get in— because I knew I needed it. And on the night of our first mixer— Everyone was introducing themselves like “I’m the proud principal of x” and I was like— “Being a principal… do not recommend. Zero stars. And this fellowship will be successful if I don’t quit.” Ya’ll, I am so grateful for divine timing and order. To get real development, strategy, and beloved community with other Black Principals— from dope Black leaders—I don’t have the right language to express my gratitude. The Leadership Collaborative is the EXEMPLAR for taking care of Senior Black Leaders. We were ALWAYS treated to the best, with the best, and I never questioned my value in their spaces. They were invested in my development, in my leadership, and my wellness. I think it’s because they ultimately know that real transformation for young people rests on the success of the principal. TLC really redefined my Surge experience (yes, I’m a 2 time Surge fellow??). THANK YOU for all that you’ve given me this year. And in case you’re wondering— I didn’t quit. #PrincipalAppreciationMonth #ChicagoFund#TheLeadershipCollaborative #SurgeInstitute #IconicLegacy #BlackPrincipalsMatter
