Belonging@Block proudly joins Elevate at H&R Block in recognizing and celebrating Juneteenth! In 1865, Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas, to announce the freedom of over 250,000 African Americans—two years after President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. While there’s more work ahead, this holiday represents a significant milestone in the ongoing fight for racial justice and equality. Elevate commemorated the day with screenings of “Juneteenth: Celebrating Freedom,” a film by Voices for Equality. The film sheds light on Juneteenth’s history, the immediate aftermath of emancipation, and the vital role of historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) in shaping African American society.
