We were honored to celebrate the 40th anniversary of our Tokyo office with our clients last week. Our ties with Japan trace back to the 1970s when the government liberalized regulation on foreign exchange and investment, and Japanese investment in US securities skyrocketed. Today our Tokyo office services many of the most sophisticated local and global asset managers, trust banks, and institutional investors for their cross-border investments. The support of our clients has been instrumental in our journey so far, and we thank everyone who joined us to celebrate this important milestone. We look forward to the future and to continuing to partner with our clients on their success.

We were delighted to host our Japan Investment Seminar in London, where we discussed the distribution opportunities for asset managers entering Japan and experienced sake tasting and calligraphy. ? Special thanks to our guest speakers Yasuhiro Matsuda from the Embassy of Japan in the UK, Paul Ellison from Clifford Chance, Kazuyuki Kawamoto from DAI-ICHI LIFE INTERNATIONAL (EUROPE) LIMITED, Mangala Ananthanarayanan from PIMCO, and Hiroki Moritani from Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Bank International, for their perspectives and contributions to an insightful conversation. Some of the key takeaways include: ?? Japan is open for business: The expansion of the NISA annual allowance is driving a shift from savings to investments. These tax-exempt investment accounts are fostering increased participation from individuals across broader age and?socio-economic groups. ?? Proactive government support: Japanese authorities are paving the way for growth, with initiatives to promote Japan as a leading asset management center in Asia. Support programs focused on market entry, including a focus on emerging managers, are available, providing legal and regulatory guidance. ?? Opportunities are deepening and widening: Asset owners and pension funds are increasing their exposure to a wider range of asset classes, including alternatives and foreign strategy funds. The gradual sophistication of the retail segment, and with it, the beneficial changes to operational frameworks, are expected to accelerate product growth opportunities.?

Asset managers cite poor data quality as a barrier to achieving integration within their operating models. The scale of this challenge is one reason why Deloitte is seeing asset servicers increase their budget allocations in data management from 14% in 2021 to 35% in 2023. Read more on how to design a data approach that removes barriers and helps preserve the flexibility to choose the best of in-house, vendor, and service provider solutions. https://lnkd.in/eVNbda6U

Accessing new investors is always top of mind for asset managers, but what new products are in focus? Our market intelligence experts Adrian Whelan (He/Him) and Killian Lonergan discuss the growing demand for ETFs, Alternatives, and how managers are using these products to expand their investor base. ?? Asset managers are increasingly interested in ETFs (particularly active ETFs) and Alternatives as a way to attract new investors ?? Expect to see more open-ended private market vehicles, targeting a wider range of investors as the democratization of private markets continues apace ?? Interest in ETFs and Alternatives is driven by investor demand and through platforms who now have new capabilities to work with these types of funds To support the continued growth of our asset manager clients, sharing insights about product innovation and investor trends is an important part of what we do. For more information, contact Adrian Whelan and Killian Lonergan.
