Our Babson Miami MBA crew just spent an incredible few days at Babson College in Wellesley, and we couldn’t be more grateful for the warm welcome! From exploring the Blank Center for Entrepreneurship to diving into prototyping at the Weissman Foundry, discussing financial strategies at the Cutler Center, and learning from the Bertarelli Institute for Family Entrepreneurship, this trip was packed with inspiring conversations and unforgettable moments. This time, we celebrate Maria Fernanda R?mer-Cabezas, co-founder and CEO of Kiosco (formerly Toast-it), a company on a mission to share Latin culture with the world through food. Maria Fernanda and her sister made history as the first Venezuelans to appear on Shark Tank, showcasing their entrepreneurial drive and passion for innovation. Beyond growing a successful brand, she is committed to empowering women: her company employs 100% Latina women, creating opportunities and fostering a strong, inclusive community. Babson College Miami had the incredible opportunity to host Koichiro Nakamura, Senior Managing Director Sozo Ventures, Phil Wickham, Executive Managing Director, Sozo Ventures, and Reshma Sohoni, Co-Founder & Managing Partner, Seedcamp, for an exclusive discussion on evaluating startups, investment strategies, and key red flags investors watch out for. But this wasn’t just a talk at campus, our MBA students experienced the investment process firsthand! Sozo Ventures and Seedcamp went beyond the event and joined our Face-to-Face weekend classes, where they advised students on their Capstone projects, challenged them with tough investor-style questions, and shared what truly makes a pitch stand out. Throughout the weekend, students also had the opportunity to analyze companies, evaluate key valuation factors, and think like investors. A huge thank you to Professor Mark P. Rice for organizing this initiative, and to Phil Wickham, who, even while recovering in Japan, joined us virtually to share his expertise. Another Face-to-Face weekend at Babson College Miami is in the books, and what a weekend it was! From insightful guest speakers to unforgettable experiences, our community came together once again to learn, connect, and celebrate. Benjamin Sánchez, Managing Director of Domestic Network Planning at United Airlines, who gave us a masterclass on how airlines plan routes and pricing, offering an inside look into the complexities of aviation strategy. ?? Erick Soderstrom, a seasoned strategic leader with experience at Converse, AT&T, Domo, and Motorola, who shared valuable lessons on the importance of true strategy and purpose in business, drawing from both his successes and failures. Beyond the classroom, we also made time to celebrate birthdays and enjoyed a Miami Heat vs. Pacers game! A huge congratulations to Ernesto Forero Fernández de Castro, MBA 2025, for the recent publication of his book Manual de Derecho Portuario (Manual of Port Law in Colombia), in collaboration with Tirant lo Blanch, one of the most prestigious legal publishers in the Spanish-speaking world. True to the entrepreneurial spirit of Babson College, Ernesto is not only advancing in his MBA journey but also making a lasting impact in his field by introducing Port Law as an autonomous legal discipline. His book systematically organizes the principles and institutions that define this area, serving as a key reference for professionals, concessionaires, and authorities navigating port regulations. In Ernesto’s words: "My goal is for this manual to serve as a reference for understanding the autonomy of Port Law and its relationship with other legal disciplines such as administrative, commercial, and maritime law. For port operators, concessionaires, and authorities, it provides clear tools for the proper application of regulations in the management of their contracts and activities."
