When Garmin’s Emergency Autoland got world attention in 2019, thoughts immediately turned to retrofitting the system in existing planes. Six years later and still limited to turbines, Emergency Autoland and Garmin Autothrottle has become a growing OEM standard on the Piper M600 and M700 turboprop singles, current-gen Cirrus Vision Jets where it’s called Safe Return, on the Daher TBM940 where it’s called HomeSafe, and on the HondaJet Elite II. There’s solid momentum. At the NBAA Convention last October, Textron announced that Emergency Autoland would be standard in the new third-gen Citation M2, CJ3 and CJ4 light jets. Among the many items that contribute to operating overhead is hangar-keeper’s insurance. Don’t let the name fool you. Just because you rent your hangar workspace from an FBO or another third-party landlord not connected to your operation, it’s financial suicide in the making by not having the right insurance in place should something happen to a customer’s airplane or a pedestrian who is injured in your operations. The growing popularity of in-flight entertainment and cabin management systems is closely tied to the steady increases in business jet range. The longer the flight, the more the passengers want to be entertained. Of course, manufacturers were quick to offer a plethora of options, ranging from multidisc CD players to moving maps to hard drives full of movies. Then, as satellite connectivity gained in popularity, so did streaming live news, sports, and movies.
