The healthcare field is full of pioneers, but Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler is a standout in challenging prejudice and overcoming odds. Not only was she the first African-American woman in the U.S. to earn a medical degree, but she was one of the first female physician authors in the 19th century as well. This Black History Month, we celebrate Dr. Crumpler’s work and achievements in breaking racial and gender barriers in medicine. ? Dr. Crumpler developed a passion for healthcare at a young age, writing: “I early conceived a liking for, and sought every opportunity to be in a position to relieve the suffering of others.” She went on to do just that, providing medical care to freed African Americans in the South after the Civil War, publishing work to offer health advice for women and children, and laying the foundation for Black women in medicine and public health. ? #AvidiaHealth #BlackHistoryMonth #Healthcare
