An exciting research project is currently underway with Atmotube PRO. In collaboration with Design Nature CIC, Stantec, Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), and the University of Reading, the Reading Borough Council in the UK has launched the Clean Air Living Matters (CALM) program. This initiative includes activities for primary and secondary school students and the deployment of air quality sensors to raise awareness among students, parents, and teachers. By targeting issues like wood burning and particulate matter, the project aims to encourage community-wide behavioral changes. The UPSURGE project, funded by Horizon 2020, focuses on enhancing air quality and climate neutrality in urban areas through innovative Nature-Based Solutions (NBS). This initiative establishes a network of 49 Atmotube PRO wearable air pollution sensors in each of five European cities — Belfast, Breda, Budapest, Maribor, and Katowice — serving as a model for cities aiming to mitigate air pollution and transition towards regenerative urban development. The project has two main goals: ?? Engage citizens in the project, raising awareness of the effects of NBS on air quality. ?? Integrate data collected from fixed and mobile sensor stations with data from Atmotube PRO wearable sensors, creating a multimodal sensor system for monitoring air quality. Each city distributes sensors to volunteers, encouraging them to use the sensors as much as possible during their daily commutes (work-home, school-home, etc.), particularly in areas where NBS will be implemented. ???? Atmotube PRO monitors were part of the Keep Clean and Run 2024 eco-marathon, promoting outdoor sports and cleaning the environment through plogging (collecting litter while running or walking). This event, which took place in Italy, paid particular attention to the problem of urban air pollution. From April 17th to 23rd, seven marathons were held across Italy's regions: Piedmont, Lombardy, Emilia-Romagna, Tuscany, Umbria, Abruzzo, and Lazio. Roberto Cavallo, the founder of the initiative, Oliviero Alotto, and 25 other runners collected nearly 130 kg of waste during the seven stages of KCR2024. Local administrations, associations, and schools collected an additional 131 kg of waste through various cleanup activities, involving nearly 1,200 people. In total, eco-runners and local communities collected 260 kg of waste, preventing 401 kg of CO2 emissions. ?? The project monitored air quality across the seven regions using Atmotube PRO devices. The Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy, and Sustainable Economic Development ENEA will analyze and publish the data to raise public awareness and promote collective action for a cleaner environment.
