  • Honoring Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month: A Journey of Healing and Remembrance October is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month—a time to honor and remember the babies who are no longer with us while acknowledging the grief and healing journeys of parents and families affected by these profound losses. Pregnancy and infant loss are often shrouded in silence, leaving families to grieve in isolation. The pain of miscarriage, stillbirth, neonatal loss, or failed/disrupted adoption is immeasurable, yet many feel they cannot openly express their heartache. This month seeks to break that silence by creating space for remembrance, connection, and shared healing. It’s important to recognize that there is no “right” way to grieve these losses. Grief is deeply personal and may come in waves, triggered by memories, milestones, or even societal expectations. Some may find healing through quiet reflection, while others find comfort in sharing their story. Whatever the path, every journey is valid. For marginalized or oppressed groups, including families of color, LGBTQ+ families, single parents, and parents managing disabilities, the experiences of loss are particularly nuanced. They have been historically disenfranchised and often face additional challenges in building their families. Thus, they may encounter barriers to inclusive support. A lack of validation and visibility in their reproductive journeys can contribute to a deeper sense of isolation. This month offers an opportunity to listen, learn, and ensure that every grieving family is seen, heard, and supported. ... Writing credit and thank you to Dr. Loree Johnson, PhD, LMFT

  • From ASRM: Presenting an industry sponsored webinar by Everie with Lisa Schuman, Melissa Lindsey and Pamela Callum During the donor screening process, typically the donor’s history and three generations of immediate family members medical history is reviewed before qualifying a donor. But this is only a point in time and based on self-reported history. While genetic carrier screening tests are also normally performed, these must be interpreted alongside accurate familial medical history. Obviously, a donor and their family’s medical conditions evolves as they age, and doesn’t a donor conceived individual deserve access to this ongoing information? Collectively, the speakers believe donor conceived individuals are entitled to and must have access to ongoing medical information regarding their donor origins to ensure their own well-being. But who has accountability to handle that reporting? Today no mechanized method exists to update and report on donor family medical evolution and it’s a problem we will only continue to face until we solve it.

  • Qualified fertility counselors work with patients, donors, gestational carriers, and other infertility professionals at every step of the treatment process. As trained therapists first, we have expertise in treating depression, anxiety, and other mental health challenges that may occur along with infertility. As qualified fertility counselors we have additional specialized training in reproductive mental health, assisted reproductive treatment technologies (ART), and third-party family-building, allowing us to understand the process of fertility treatment and the complex decisions that need to be made along the way. We use this knowledge to help patients cope with the stress of treatment. We also support patients in making decisions that are consistent with their values and take the needs of their future children into account. Fertility counselors both in private practice and fertility clinic settings provide individual and couples psychotherapies, supportive or skills-based therapy groups, and grief- or trauma-informed care for patients experiencing loss and stress so commonly associated with the fertility treatment process. Some of us even run stress management groups for fertility medical providers! But we get to do more than that. Our third-party psychology role includes evaluating potential egg and sperm donors and gestational carriers to make sure that their collaboration is right for the intended parents, for the child, and for them. We work with members of the infertility care team to advocate for patients and help them receive care that is affirming of their family-building goals and family configurations, and emotionally and culturally informed. We are dedicated to accompanying patients on their fertility journey in all these ways and more. For more information on guidance around qualifications for fertility counselors, you can find the Practice Committee and the Mental Health Professional Group of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine’s “Guidance on qualifications for fertility counselors: A committee opinion” here: https://lnkd.in/gAUrJ5j3 If you are interested in learning more about the ASRM MHPG, please visit: https://lnkd.in/dcQxW2M (Special thanks to Danielle Kaplan for writing credits.)

  • Not to miss! “In this webinar, experts will delve into the complexities of couples facing infertility treatment, focusing on how to assess and address the varying levels of distress they experience. We'll explore the evolving psychosocial needs of couples before, during, and after treatment, and discuss the benefits of mind-body interventions like yoga and mindfulness in alleviating psychological stress. The session will also cover effective strategies for delivering difficult news, managing anxiety post-successful treatment, and providing psychological support in cases of male infertility and third-party reproduction. Additionally, we'll examine ways to help couples develop alternative life goals and introduce end-of-treatment therapy for those who have faced repeated treatment failures.
