  • We are very excited at our group of keynote speakers at this year's ASPRS Mid-South Annual Conference to be held 24-25 April at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Today we share with you one of those keynote speakers, Dr. George Raber from the University of Southern Mississippi. Dr. Raber's talk is entitled, "Mapping and Monitoring the Coral Growth and Dynamics Utilizing High-Resolution Drone (UAV) Imagery and Machine Learning Techniques" Dr. George Raber is a geographic information scientist with research interests centered on remote sensing and spatial modeling, particularly within coastal and littoral environments and their interaction with human activities. His expertise encompasses web mapping, spatial programming and automation, and image processing. Dr. Raber's current research involves applying spatial modeling to coastal and littoral environments and has increasingly incorporated machine learning for various applications such as coral reef identification and mapping, conservation planning, and the analysis of remotely sensed data for sidewalk networks. He actively engages in research through numerous funded projects with organizations like The Nature Conservancy, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the Naval Research Lab. Beyond his research, Dr. Raber is a Professor and Program Coordinator for Geography and Geology at the University of Southern Mississippi where he has been on the faculty for over 20 years. Before USM he did his graduate work in Geography at the University of South Carolina.?He teaches courses in his field including newer technology-based courses like Drones and Spatial Data Collection, advises undergraduate and graduate students, and contributes to the university and wider community through institutional and public service, such as his role on the Mississippi IHL Geospatial Board. + Consider attending the conference virtually or in-person through registering (deadline April 11): https://lnkd.in/eDpKmDsc + Consider giving a talk at the conference (deadline March 21 for titles and abstracts emailed to David Hughes [[email protected]]) + Thank you to NV5, Orbital Sidekick, Spectral Evolution, ImpulseRADAR, and Oak Ridge National Laboratory for their financial, scientific, and logistical sponsorship this year!

  • My apologies but it appears that a mistake (I probably made) has closed registration for the conference. But this is not the case as you can still register if you are a US citizen. Until the deadline is changed for registration in the system and it opens back up, please feel free to email me at [email protected] if you would like to register and I can work with you on getting on our list. When the system comes back up, you can then handle registration fees (if they apply to you). Thank you for your patience and sorry for the inconvenience. I hope you all have a super day! • We hope you are having a super day! Today we're sharing one of our awesome keynote speakers who will join us virtually at the ASPRS Mid-South Conference (24-25 April, 2025 at Oak Ridge National Laboratory) and discuss his work entitled "Geospatial Operations for Missions". We are very lucky to have Dr. Fred J. Calef III, a Science Systems Engineer/geologist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), be one of our honored keynote speakers! He's worked in the geospatial field for over 30 years in private industry and federal, state, and local government agencies. Fred is the principal investigator for the Multi-Mission Geographic Information System (MMGIS) which is an open source, web-based, mapping system for science operations on Earth, Mars, the Moon, and beyond. He works on the Curiosity and Perseverance rover missions on Mars as lead Mapping Specialist. Talk abstract: Missions operations on Earth, the Moon, and Mars always requires a clear spatial context for understanding spacecraft position, instrument pointing, and target acquisition. For the past eight years, we've been building an open source, web-based, geospatial application called the Multi-Mission Geographic Information System (MMGIS) focused on planetary science operations. Having a unified mapping system shared across a science team provides spatial awareness and capabilities to answer "first questions" (e.g. "where is the spacecraft?", "where have we acquired images?, etc.). In addition, we provide more advanced geospatial tools like viewshed generation, data profiles, collaborative mapping, raw data querying/rendering, and labeling for machine learning. Our supported mission profiles have expanded from surface and orbiter missions to airborne imaging campaigns and other simulated mission fieldwork on Earth. ++Register to attend the conference (in-person or virtual): https://lnkd.in/eDpKmDsc ++Talk requests are still open until Friday, March 21. If you'd like to give a talk, please contact David Hughes ([email protected]) to get on the agenda!
