EOP advances strategies, policies, and ideas to help low- and moderate-income people thrive in a changing economy.
关于我们
The Economic Opportunities Program (EOP) advances strategies, policies, and ideas to help low- and moderate-income people thrive in a changing economy. We recognize that race, gender, and place intersect with and intensify the challenge of economic inequality and we address these dynamics by advancing an inclusive vision of economic justice. For over 25 years, EOP has focused on expanding individuals’ opportunities to connect to quality work, start businesses, and build economic stability that provides the freedom to pursue opportunity. We collaborate with national and local leaders across the United States – nonprofit leaders, policymakers, labor leaders, business leaders, educators, academics, and more – and we actively seek input and ideas from individuals and communities affected by proposed approaches to address economic opportunity challenges. Through our leadership and fellowship programs; applied research and evaluation; data and analysis; and dialogue with diverse stakeholders, we work at both local and national levels to build understanding and galvanize action to address the challenge of economic opportunity in America. EOP encompasses efforts engaging different approaches toward expanding opportunity: the Business Ownership Initiative, Good Companies/Good Jobs, UpSkill America, the Workforce Strategies Initiative. In addition, across these approaches EOP hosts the Economic Opportunity Fellows Network and the Working in America event series. An Advisory Council offers insights, strategic counsel, and guidance in support of our work.

What if our biggest challenge with AI isn’t speed but scaling? In my recent The Aspen Institute conversation, "The Potential for Scaling Technology: Increased Labor Productivity…If We Get It Right," we explored a paradox I often hear from many CEOs: their investments in AI and digital technologies haven’t yet translated into meaningful productivity gains. Several CEOs have noted that they see AI everywhere except in their bottom line. The truth is that AI alone doesn’t drive performance. It’s about where we focus the application and how we embed it to rewire the corporation. We see a small set of leaders who are able to drive stellar business performance using AI: they use digital twins to accelerate time to market by 50%, achieve 40% higher productivity in supply chains, and drive significant organic growth, much higher than their peers. AI will transform everything we do. Its impact will be felt across every function in every company, in every region of the world. We are facing what is likely the biggest generational disruption and opportunity of our lifetime. https://bit.ly/3RlOr6h #FutureOfWork #AIandLeadership #ScalingWithPurpose

Report Release: many of you are looking for some weekend reading. Haley Glover and team are here to support your needs. Check out UpSkill America latest report focusing on small to medium size employers in the skills and credentialing space. #futureofwork #alllearningcounts #skills
One more post today... We released this paper a couple weeks back that takes a close look at how small and mid-sized businesses are encountering and perceiving the Skills First movement (spoiler--they're already implementing practices!) and how the drive to develop Learning and Employment Records can and should be adapted to better include the needs and capacities of SMBs. We uncovered a lot, but the things that keep swirling are: - SMBs have SO MUCH to gain from this work - for organizations managing talent in Excel or HR leaders who are also CFOs and COOs, codifying skills and creating clear pipelines for legit talent are game changers. - SMBs are really interested in skills, less so in credentials. That means that skills data and information in these records has to be usable, relevant, and contextualized - having evidence of skills demonstration and and understanding of an individual's competency level is really important to SMBs. More on this topic soon. Big thank you to Patti Constantakis and Sean Murphy for their leadership and support! https://lnkd.in/gfxadv8p

This session (featuring UpSkill America's own Haley Glover) was insightful and informative. Check out the links below to view the recording!
I had the privilege of presenting at the South By Southwest (#SXSW) conference, where I joined Lydia Logan and Haley Glover AI Alliance to discuss the future of work and learning in the context of AI. Our session,?AI & the Future of Work: Essential Competencies, focused on the AI competencies needed across various sectors, from entry-level tech workers to policymakers and educators. We explored opportunities for cross-sector collaboration to enhance AI knowledge and skills, and the development of The?Essential Competencies for AI Guide, which outlines key competencies such as responsible AI use and data analysis, aiming to bridge the AI divide and promote inclusive access to AI education. A career in trucking was once considered a pathway to the middle class. Yet the quality of jobs in the industry has steeply declined in recent decades. Long-haul truckers, who might spend days or weeks away from home, have seen their salaries fall by as much as half since the deregulation of the industry a half century ago, and annual turnover hovers near 100%. Short-haul truckers are frequently misclassified as independent contractors, stripping them of benefits and worker protections and burdening them with the costs of owning and operating a truck. And predatory leasing arrangements are pushed on truckers by the industry, saddling many with debt that they struggle to pay off. All of this is in spite of the fact that truckers work year-round, at all hours of the day, while exposed to hazards, to ensure that our economy keeps moving. In recent years, a common narrative developed that there is a shortage of truck drivers. What is missing, however, is that this shortage is driven in large part by the industry’s turnover rates and the lack of good jobs that allow truckers to thrive. Today, there are nearly three times as many people with the necessary licensing and qualifications as there are trucking jobs. In addition, new developments in technology promise to upend the industry as companies embrace automation and increasingly deploy methods of surveillance. As a key pillar of our economy and supply chain, and one of the largest occupations in the US, the job quality of workers in the trucking sector has far-reaching implications. Join the Aspen Institute Economic Opportunities Program on March 19 to explore the challenges truckers face and ideas for improving the returns for the essential work they do.
