How can newsrooms continue to serve communities with fact-based reporting in this moment? Journalism leaders recently made urgent calls to action for local news. Following our 2025 Local News Summit last month, our team and Lenfest Institute for Journalism invited experts to share their insights. Their joint op-ed was published last week in Columbia Journalism Review. It's World NGO Day, and we're celebrating the nonprofits that are connecting young people in America to their digital lives, and doing so with dignity. Nonprofits like Common Sense Media, which piloted a media campaign in Phoenix, AZ, to inform eligible families of the Affordable Connectivity Program. The program reached more than 8,500 individuals. Or how about PCs for People? They're tackling hardware access and e-Waste recycling at the same time. 400,000 computers have been distributed, with 23 million tons of e-waste diverted from landfills. There's also Can Code Communities, which is creating workforce pathways and promoting STEM skills. They're empowering elementary and middle school teachers to incorporate coding activities into the school day, impacting more than 5,000 students in NY and MA. Feeling inspired? For this year, our Emerging Tech Team is focused on futures worth building. Our aim is to cultivate publics that are AI-ready and AI systems that are public-ready. As director B Cavello likes to say, we help people “flex their hope muscles” by making it easier to create technologies that work for all of us. Check out their team's plans for 2025, and catch highlights from their successes last year: https://ow.ly/e4Ev50V6cJW #PublicAI #Innovation #Futures

Our emerging technologies director, B Cavello, made remarks last week about the Global Digital Compact at an informal stakeholder consultation hosted by the United Nations. ???? "I appreciate the Global Digital Compact’s language around opportunity assessment," B said. ?? "In order to achieve the [Sustainable Development Goals], the global AI community must not only avoid the potential risks associated with AI but also clearly articulate the priorities, challenges, and opportunities that AI must address to be a true public good." What's the state of cybersecurity regulation across countries? Often fragmented and inefficient. Since it's Global Information Governance Day, we're re-upping recs for how to harmonize. When legal frameworks differ across geographies, it can be challenging and costly to regulate compliance practices. Bad actors exploit the resulting gaps. In “A Security Symphony,” our Global Cybersecurity Group offers principles for sharing tactics, techniques, and procedures among governments, industries, and partner countries. ?? Looking back on 2024, how did the first global "AI elections" shake out? Our experts offer their insights. ?? A record 4 billion people were eligible to vote around the world last year. At the same time, rapid advances in AI represented serious risks to the security and information integrity of elections. ?? Some call AI's impact on elections "the dog that didn't bark." That's not quite true, but the worst-case scenarios didn't come to pass – at least, not at scale. Still, this past year laid the foundations for the future. ?? Our team's Tom Latkowski and Vivian Schiller, along with advisor Katie Harbath, reflect on AI’s role in 2024 elections around the globe and look ahead to the next chapter of its influence on democracy.
