From soccer recruit to civil engineering standout, Genna Gaitan's (CE 4th Year) journey at Illinois Tech has been one of discovery and growth. Initially drawn by our low student-to-professor ratio and vibrant Chicago setting, she started in social, economic, and development policy but soon found her true passion in civil engineering. Now, as a dedicated member of the Society for Environmental Engineers and Scientists (SEES) and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), Genna has thrived in leadership roles, gaining invaluable field experience through internships with Hubbell, Roth, & Clark and Kimley-Horn. With a minor in sustainability and a specialization in environmental engineering, she credits Illinois Tech’s comprehensive civil engineering curriculum for exposing her to diverse subfields like structural, geotechnical, and sustainable buildings. It’s this well-rounded education and close-knit community that have prepared her to excel in her upcoming internship on the surface water team at Kimley-Horn. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/ga737HYB

Big news for cancer research! Illinois Tech’s Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering Kenneth Tichauer and Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering Jovan Brankov just secured a $2.5 million NIH grant to develop an imaging system that could transform head and neck cancer surgeries. By providing real-time insights right in the operating room, their technology could drastically reduce the need for repeat surgeries—meaning quicker recovery and better outcomes for patients. Working alongside the expert surgical team at University Medical Center Groningen, the Illinois Tech researchers, including Simon Parschat (Ph.D. BME Student), Mahsa Imani(Ph.D. BME Student), and Research Associate Wei Zhou, are optimizing their system with cutting-edge low-light imaging and AI-driven algorithms for rapid detection. This work promises to improve the surgical process, enhance accuracy, and could eventually extend to other types of cancer surgeries. #IllinoisTech #Cancer #CancerResearch https://lnkd.in/gjXm3qXS
