These writing tips from the APA Style blog can apply to many types of writing: ???"It may be helpful to write your paper out of order. Start by writing the 'heart' of your paper first, in which you analyze the literature, and then write the introduction, paper title, and conclusion." ???"Present one idea per paragraph. The first sentence of the paragraph should contain the main point of the paragraph, and the other sentences should support the main point." ???"Focus on relevant details when describing studies. Report parallel information across studies to show similarities and differences. For example, report the same information about participant demographics for all studies, if possible, to increase your readers’ ability to generalize the results." ?? For more tips like these, see this post from the #APAStyle blog from our webinar in partnership with Psi Chi The International Honor Society in Psychology: https://lnkd.in/dDuyBVae #APA7 #APAguide #AcademicWriting

The general guideline for writing about numbers in APA Style is to use numerals when discussing numbers 10 and above (per Section 6.32 in the Publication Manual) and to use words when discussing numbers zero through nine (per Section 6.33). Did you know that these guidelines apply to ordinal numbers (https://lnkd.in/e_G6HjUb), too? For instance, you might write about ?? "the third attempt" ?? "fourth grade" but ?? "the 14th attempt" ?? "10th grade" Because numbers are used in many different context, there are exceptions to these general guidelines. You can find those outlined in our Numbers and Statistics Guide, available free on our Handouts and Guides page: https://lnkd.in/grqdeMnv #APAStyle #APA7 #numbers #AcademicWriting

In the Publication Manual (7th ed.), Section 8.1 notes that when writing a research paper, both paraphrases (Sections 8.23–8.24) and direct quotations (Sections 8.25–8.35) require in-text citations. In addition, that section advises that authors "cite only works that you have read and ideas that you have incorporated into your writing." That is, you don't need to cite sources that merely helped you find other works relevant to your topic. Two key things to remember are as follows: ?? Each work you cite should appear in the reference list. ?? Each work in the reference list should be cited in the body of your paper at least once. ?? Our In-Text Citation Checklist includes this reminder: "Cite all ideas, findings, results, or other information that is not your own and is not common knowledge." That checklist and others can be downloaded for free on our Handouts and Guides page: https://lnkd.in/grqdeMnv #InTextCitations #AcademicWriting #CitingSources #APA7 #APAStyle

This excerpt is from our blog post about how many U.S. college students use APA Style: "By the time students get to college and are taking classes for their majors, instructors often expect them to already know APA Style. This means students need to learn APA Style earlier, such as in high school or the beginning of college in first-year writing classes. Students facing the task of learning APA Style are often skeptical about its value—after all, learning (and teaching) any writing style takes time and effort. People want to be sure that APA Style will be a wise investment. To understand more about how widely used APA Style is in college—and thus how useful it might be to know, no matter what you study or plan to study—we on the APA Style team set out to quantify how many U.S. college students use or could use APA Style. We present the results of that work in the form of an APA Style research paper." For these details findings, please read our post at https://lnkd.in/eN6CZt8F and add your thoughts in the comments about how APA Style is used at your school. #APAStyle #LearningAPAStyle #TeachingAPAStyle #APA7

This is an excerpt from the APA Style Open Science webpage: "Transparency is a central issue [https://lnkd.in/edhtabwr] across APA Style JARS (Journal Article Reporting Standards). These guidelines provide a degree of comprehensiveness in the information that is routinely included in reports of empirical investigations, be they quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methods in nature. Thus, transparency in reporting permits readers to better comprehend the way methods were carried out, to replicate methods in varied contexts, and to locate findings within the published article. We also support the Transparency and Openness Promotion (TOP) Guidelines [https://lnkd.in/eYE8fMa7] developed by a community working group in conjunction with the Center for Open Science. Additional information about research transparency standards, replication studies, open science badges, preprints, preregistration, and more can be found on the APA Journals Open Science at APA page [https://lnkd.in/exdt6_Dv]."
