Did you know that 90% of a child's brain develops by the age of 5? This week, VPM launched a messaging campaign to remind all adults that even the smallest interactions can make a lasting difference in a child's life. Thanks to the Robins Foundation and our partners at Thrive Birth to Five as well as Steve Humble, Brad Armstrong, Mary Jo Grieve, Irene Carney and Familiar Creatures for bringing this campaign to life. What is it going to take to solve the housing affordability crisis? According to GRETA HARRIS, we’re going to have to dig into our humanity and find the will to coexist. As the region faces increasing housing costs and we sustain a 44,000 unit shortage, more and more Richmonders are going to get squeezed out. Tune into this interview with Greta and Will Melton tomorrow at 6 AM on ESPN Richmond 106.1 FM or wherever you get your podcasts to learn about Better Housing Coalition’s $100 million fundraising target and eventual $1 billion investment in housing they plan to make in the region. That said, we have a long way to go to create a YIMBY attitude across the community that enables housing stability for the entire region. This is a key pillar in the pursuit for a healthier city.

I just recorded my final interview of the year for America's Healthiest City. It was an privilege to sit down with GRETA HARRIS, the President and CEO of Better Housing Coalition. Greta has been an instrumental force in growing the awareness of and the attention placed on the housing affordability crisis. Her work to introduce tens of thousands of affordable-to-market-rate units has given a stable home to even more families than that. Unfortunately, it’s still not enough. There is much more work and investment that will be needed to dig out of the 44,000 unit shortage we face in this region. But get this: Better Housing Coalition plans to invest $1 billion into new housing projects in the region over the next decade. That’s billion with a B! More details to come when they adopt their new strategic plan, but that’s a BIG investment! I can’t wait to air this episode this Thursday on ESPN 106.1 FM at 6 AM. Tune in online at espnrichmond.com, YouTube, LinkedIn or wherever you get your podcasts. I’ll air one more show before the end of the year with a big announcement and some of the best highlights from the past 12 months. Big thanks to Xponent21 intern and America’s Healthiest City producer Camryn Craig for helping to film today’s interview. ??

Last week, we aired an episode of America's Healthiest City that was quite different than any of the others we aired prior. Instead of taking to someone who is in love with Richmond and is working to make it better, Will Melton interviewed someone who tried to make Richmond work and is deciding to move away from RVA. Sparkle Veronica Taylor, a resident of Gilpin Court, shared her story of trying to make it - first as someone who moved here and was without a home in short order, then as a resident of the Big Six. While this is a hard interview to hear and it hardly embodies the uplifting message we feel is critical to build this belief system, we need to listen more to those who haven’t made it yet and struggle every day to get above water. Please head over to YouTube or to your podcast platform of choice to listen to the entire interview. I hope you’ll help us find ways to bridge the gaps that Sparkle shared about living in poverty here. We can do so much more. Subscribe and listen here: https://lnkd.in/ejKH3xzy Thanks to the team at Xponent21 for supporting, producing, and editing this show and thanks to Mike King and ONTHEMICWITHMIKERVA . for airing our content on ESPN. ?? #rva #americashealthiestcity #richmondva #bigsix #publichousing #gilpincourt
