Amazon Key is a top-selling product on 4 continents. V1 of the product had 0 customers. I had pitched this great idea, gotten funding, and spent a whole year building the tech. The plan was to revolutionize the parking industry by letting consumers buy access to parking spots on demand. But, reality has a way of changing even the best-laid plans. There was barely any customer uptake and a whole host of issues with liability, legal, distribution, etc. I had spent a year building a product that wasn’t going to work in the real world. I thought I had failed. What I didn’t know was that I was actually just building the foundation of an idea that WOULD work. I started to learn about all the different access control challenges that our operations team faced when delivering products: gated communities, apartments, condos, etc. They needed a safe, streamlined way to temporarily access multi-family properties and deliver packages in a secure location. This was exactly what the parking technology I had built was designed to do. My tech hadn’t failed after all, it just solved a problem that I hadn’t initially considered. The lesson I learned from this experience is that invention is not an individual process. Invention is interactive. You have to talk to potential customers and see how your idea can solve real world problems. Your initial idea rarely does what you think it will, but that doesn’t mean it is a bad idea. It probably just means you need to have more conversations, make some tweaks, and keep searching for a new problem to solve. Do you have an example of pivoting to success?
