Kim Stallwood interviewed Professor Winders for his Substack article: "Elephants Lack Legal Standing: Colorado Supreme Court Ruling Explained" "In January, the Colorado Supreme Court unanimously ruled five elephants, Missy, Kimba, Lucky, LouLou, and Jambo, lacked legal standing to sue to leave their captivity at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo because they are not people. The ruling was in response to a legal standing case brought by the Nonhuman Rights Project. To help us understand the importance and consequences of this case, I asked Delcianna J. Winders, associate professor of law and Director of the Animal Law and Policy Institute at the Vermont Law and Graduate School about why these elephants have no right to liberty 'no matter how cognitively, psychologically, or socially sophisticated they may be.'” Read the interview at: https://lnkd.in/e69NvHf9

Announcing a new installment of Animal Law Fundamentals! “Animal Welfare Act: Oversight of the Pet Trade" by Professor Delcianna Winders is now available. View the preview and full presentation for this episode at the link below. https://lnkd.in/djUpHKET Description: In 1966, public outrage about petnappers supplying animals for experimentation overcame longstanding opposition to enacting a federal animal welfare law. Today, the wholesale pet trade is one of the main industries that the Animal Welfare Act regulates. After discussing which “pets” are protected under this law—a complex issue that turns on species, location, and use—this presentation describes the welfare standards governing companion animal dealers and how they are—and are not—enforced. It concludes by highlighting promising recent developments and opportunities to become part of the solution. Animal Law Fundamentals is a free documentary-style series of video presentations and scholarly papers on the fundamentals of animal law by notable animal law scholars. The goal of this series is to make the fundamentals of animal law accessible to the public from premier subject matter experts. It is an orientation for anyone interested in gaining a substantive overview on an animal law subject matter quickly and effectively by listening to an academic or practicing scholar, as well as having a companion paper into which there can be a ‘deep dive'. #thebrooksinstitute #animallawfundamentals #alf #animallaw #animalpolicy #animallawandpolicy #brooksu #animalwelfareact #awa #animalprotection #animalprotectionlaws

This talk is going to be incredible!
I am so excited to announce my upcoming talk at #VARC2025! On behalf of Animal Law and Policy Institute at VLGS I will be discussing how infantilizing animals, even within the movement, causes legal exploitation and funnels even advocates into cruel economies of exhibition. I will propose a privacy right for non-humans built on dignity and autonomy! Come hang out with me in Manchester, it's going to be a blast!
