We congratulate Officer Opsut and K9 Rex, as well as Officer Ceglio and K9 Rust, on their successful completion of K9 School! The school focused on obedience, tracking, evidence searches, building searches, criminal apprehension and handler protection. Their dedication, hard work, and teamwork have truly paid off, and they are now ready to serve with their K9 partners in the field. A special thank you to lead trainer Officer Rolon for his knowledge, leadership and patience, and to Officer Dannenfelser for his support throughout the entire training process. Their guidance was instrumental in the success of this school. We wish Officer Opsut, Officer Ceglio, K9 Rex, and K9 Rust the best of luck as they begin this next chapter in service to our community. We thank the @alexandriapolicefoundation for their support of the APD K9 Unit.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s message about justice and social equality is as important today as it was when he first delivered the “I Have a Dream” speech in 1963. Today, on Martin Luther King Jr's birthday, Alexandria Police Patrol Lieutenant Marcus Downey was recognized for setting a powerful example of servant leadership, receiving the 2025 City of Alexandria MLK Spirit Award presented by City Manager Jim Parajon today at the MLK Staff Celebration held at the Lee Center. Lt. Downey continues to identify and encourage officers to make a difference beyond traditional police work by volunteering to distribute food with ALIVE!, feeding those in need with Meade Church, preparing and serving dinner at the Alexandria Community Shelter and regularly delivering Meals on Wheels. His actions inspire the next generation of officers to adopt values of compassion, service, and civic responsibility, creating an atmosphere of mutual respect and trust. #onealexandria #oneapd

As we close out 2024, we celebrate the prestigious accomplishment of APD's Captain North who is among 257 law enforcement officers who graduated this month from the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia. The 292nd session of the National Academy consisted of men and women from 48 states, the District of Columbia, and Guam. The class included members of law enforcement agencies from 27 countries, eight military organizations, and five federal civilian organizations. Internationally known for its academic excellence, the National Academy offers 11 weeks of advanced communication, leadership, and fitness training. Participants must have proven records as professionals within their agencies to attend. On average, these officers have 21 years of law enforcement experience and usually return to their agencies to serve in executive-level positions. Captain North, we salute you for your dedication to this noble profession, your professionalism and leadership. Congratulations on this major accomplishment. #onealexandria #oneapd
