We are excited to announce that Dr. Dan Turner has been named Dean of the Albers School of Business and Economics, effective July 1, 2025. Dr. Turner brings a wealth of experience from the UW Foster School of Business, where he serves as a Teaching Professor of Marketing, the Peter and Noydena Brix Endowed Faculty Fellow, and Associate Dean of Master’s Programs. His leadership spans strategy and operations for various graduate programs. I was thinking about the difference between Spotify and live, local, nonprofit radio over the weekend. One is low-effort, high-reward, educational, and often a little weird. The other provides a satisfying, accessible background to a dinner party. I suspect you know which is which. Algorithms and AI have come to describe much of what we ingest audibly or visually. They dominate the marketing landscape (and a lot of what we read on here, too). AI copywriting is faster, cheaper, and always available. Why pay a copywriter when a tool can churn out a blog post in seconds? Why hire a strategist when AI can analyze thousands of SEO keywords in an instant? Because there’s a difference between an AI playlist and a real live DJ. For decades, commercial radio played what the big labels pushed. Then came Spotify, promising personalized recommendations. And it did a decent job until – surprise! - reports surfaced that it sometimes prioritizes songs based on Spotify’s costs or on industry deals, not just your taste. Meanwhile, KEXP and KNKX Public Radio still boast human DJs, carefully curating music, introducing you to artists and styles you’d never find on your own, shaping how you experience sound, educating and sharing anecdotes that you won’t find anywhere else. They’re why I listen to certain bands, hang out at certain venues, and support their sponsors. AI is the playlist. It’s the algorithm-driven, efficiency-maximizing, SEO-optimized, engagement-calculated content machine. It works wonders when you need something functional, when you need volume, when you’re just looking for something to play in the background. But what happens when you need something bold? Something new? Something that shifts how your audience experiences and understands your product and your brand? That’s what a great writer can do. Sometimes, AI is the perfect solution. Sometimes, you just need a solid background track of SEO-focused content, quick-turn copy, scalable messaging. But sometimes, your brand needs a voice, a perspective, a narrative that stands out.
