UNDERSTANDING RISK, THREAT AND VULNERABILITIES ??While often used interchangeably, threats and vulnerabilities are distinct concepts in the realm of cybersecurity. Clarifying these differences is crucial for effective risk management. ??A threat refers to a potential source or actor capable of exploiting vulnerabilities. Threats can be intentional (e.g hackers) or unintentional (e.gnatural disasters). Examples include: - Ransomware attacks - Phishing scams - Insider threats - Malware infections - Physical attacks ??Vulnerabilities: A vulnerability is a flaw or weakness that can be exploited to harm an organization. Vulnerabilities can exist in various forms, including: - Unpatched systems - Weak passwords or reused passwords - Outdated software - Misconfigured networks - Human error ?? Risks: Risk represents the potential for harm or loss resulting from a threat exploiting a vulnerability. In other words, risk is the likelihood and potential impact of a threat successfully exploiting a vulnerability. - Threats exploit vulnerabilities. - Vulnerabilities provide a pathway for threats to cause harm. - Risks arise from the intersection of threats and vulnerabilities.
