The West Broad Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Project is a 9.3-mile corridor which will be the first BRT to operate in a dedicated lane in Central Ohio. ? This corridor is anticipated to be the first of many rapid transit investments as part of LinkUS Columbus, a transportation and growth plan to modernize and expand the region’s transportation system. LinkUS was collaboratively created by Central Ohio Transit Authority (COTA), the City of Columbus, the Franklin County Board of Commissioners, the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission (MORPC) and the Columbus Partnership. ? ?? Major milestone achieved at Darlington station ?? The AECOM designed footbridge at Darlington station has been installed, marking a significant milestone in the station’s redevelopment. This complex activity, involving a 750-tonne crane to lower prefabricated bridge sections through a carefully cut opening in the Victorian roof, showcases the technical and engineering challenges of integrating modern infrastructure within a historic setting. By April 2025, the final section will be in place, enhancing connectivity and reinforcing Darlington’s historic role as the birthplace of the railways while delivering a modern, future-proofed transport hub. In collaboration with Network Rail and BAM UK & Ireland, we have provided architectural and engineering expertise to ensure the footbridge seamlessly integrates with the Grade II* listed station. This step-free bridge is a vital link between the historic concourse and the newly constructed platforms, improving passenger flow and accessibility. Phil A Constable, Professional Head of Railway - Civil Engineering, said: “It was exciting to see the first two spans of the new footbridge for the upgraded Darlington Station lifted into place. While not yet complete with the roof, glazing, and other finishes, it is clear how well the bridge will sit within its surroundings.” Mark McIntosh MCIAT, Regional Director - Architecture & Design, added: “The new footbridge at Darlington Station is a carefully crafted balance between heritage and modern functionality. It is a testament to how contemporary infrastructure can be sensitively designed to complement and celebrate the past while delivering a future-ready railway environment.”
