We recently joined Falkirk Council at Westquarter Primary School for a fantastic STEM event, helping pupils explore how we can reduce flooding and protect local rivers like the Westquarter Burn. Through classroom activities and hands-on exploration, we showed how healthy rivers and nature-based solutions can work alongside traditional engineering to manage surface water and build resilience against flooding. This event is part of the work we’re delivering in Westquarter to develop a Surface Water Management Plan and Natural Flood Management study, helping tackle challenges in a Potentially Vulnerable Area for flooding. It was inspiring to see the pupils think like engineers and scientists, putting theory into practice and discovering how STEM can help solve real-world challenges. Strengthening Scotland’s Outer Hebrides Water Network We’re enhancing the water infrastructure for the island communities of Benbecula and South Uist as part of the Caledonia Water Alliance. This ￡2.5 million investment for Scottish Water includes replacing over 11km of water main pipes, ensuring a more resilient supply for the future. The work spans the stunning South Ford causeway, connecting Benbecula to South Uist, with construction primarily along rural land and road verges carried out by local contractor MacInnes Bros. Engaging with local schools, we shared insights into the water cycle, water conservation, and the community benefits of the project. Pupils received reusable water bottles made from ocean-bound plastic and eco-friendly stationery, promoting sustainability. With the project nearing completion, these critical upgrades will safeguard the islands’ water supply for generations to come. #WaterSupply #CommunityBenefits

AECOM is proud to celebrate the completion of construction of the ￡200 million Leeds Flood Alleviation Scheme. This landmark project combines pioneering engineering with nature-based solutions, reducing flood risk to over 4,000 homes and 1,000 businesses, safeguarding over 33,000 jobs. As technical advisor, we worked closely with Leeds City Council, the Environment Agency, BAM UK & Ireland, and Mott MacDonald to deliver assets including two innovative sensor-controlled floodgates capable of holding 1,800,000m3 of floodwater—equivalent to 720 Olympic-sized swimming pools. This scheme sets a benchmark for flood resilience and climate adaptation.
