New U.S. EPA aquatic life criteria for PFAS compounds may reshape National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) discharge permits, requiring industries and municipalities to adapt. Released in September 2024, these benchmarks set stricter limits to protect surface water quality, impacting how dischargers monitor and mitigate PFAS levels. AECOM is proud to celebrate the completion of construction of the £200 million Leeds Flood Alleviation Scheme. This landmark project combines pioneering engineering with nature-based solutions, reducing flood risk to over 4,000 homes and 1,000 businesses, safeguarding over 33,000 jobs. As technical advisor, we worked closely with Leeds City Council, the Environment Agency, BAM UK & Ireland, and Mott MacDonald to deliver assets including two innovative sensor-controlled floodgates capable of holding 1,800,000m3 of floodwater—equivalent to 720 Olympic-sized swimming pools. This scheme sets a benchmark for flood resilience and climate adaptation. Will Barnett, Director of Water UK&I, and Adnan Al-Salman, Technical Director, LFAS2, represented AECOM at the completion event. In our second blog post WEFTEC 2024, #AECOM's Lucy Pugh reflects on two panel discussions she moderated with industry leaders on the topic of PFAS management, removal and destruction. “As someone who works closely with industries grappling with these issues, I have a deep appreciation for the work being done to address PFAS contamination. Companies that have produced or used PFAS didn’t create this problem with malice; they are now facing significant costs to resolve a problem that impacts us all. But they are rising to the challenge. By adapting to evolving regulations, investing in technologies, and working with experts to find effective solutions, industries are playing a crucial role in reducing PFAS from the environment,” she comments in the blog.
While at WEFTEC 2024, our Global Industrial Water Practice Director, Lucy Pugh, P.E., BCEE, joined industry leaders in responding to one of today’s most pressing environmental challenges — PFAS contamination. Moderating two panels, she and other experts discussed existing obstacles and the solutions under development that are getting closer to tackling this complex issue.
