Our ability to address the two greatest challenges of our time—climate change and biodiversity loss—depends on fundamentally rethinking how we design and construct infrastructure. In 2023, FIDIC - International Federation of Consulting Engineers, World Wildlife Fund and AECOM developed an award-winning ‘living playbook’ to advance global recognition of nature-positive infrastructure approaches. This playbook offers crucial insights and supports the implementation of nature-based solutions worldwide. This year, we launch the latest addition to this living playbook. This new section on procurement provides additional guidance for funders, developers, government agencies and contractors on embedding nature-positive principles into their project briefs and scopes of work, ensuring nature is prioritized from the outset of infrastructure planning and design. Max Wade will be at FIDIC’s Global Infrastructure Conference on the 10th September to discuss this new addition and explore the future of nature-positive infrastructure. We were thrilled to host the Minister for Climate Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, Kerry McCarthy at the Natural Capital Laboratory (NCL) during her recent trip to Scotland. Minister McCarthy spent several hours at the NCL where she experienced firsthand how this very special 100-acre rewilding project has been a catalyst for nature capital accounting research. She saw peatland restoration in action and learnt about species reintroduction work and joined conversations about?the future of this special project. In November we’ll be releasing an overview of the findings from the first five years of the NCL project as well as articles written by the experts involved. #NaturalCapital
Minister for Climate Kerry McCarthy recently went to the Orkney Islands in Scotland, where she saw how emerging technologies are harnessing wind, waves and tidal currents to help the UK deliver more secure, homegrown energy. In Loch Ness, she witnessed how protecting and restoring our natural land plays an important role in combatting climate change and reducing emissions. AECOM EMEC: European Marine Energy Centre

A little over a year ago, the updated PAS 2080:2023 standard was introduced, expanding its reach to include both buildings and infrastructure. It marked a turning point, encouraging the industry to embrace whole-life and systems thinking in our fight against carbon emissions. Since then, we’ve seen firsthand how the new PAS 2080 has pushed us—and the entire value chain—to think differently. By focusing on the interconnected nature of our projects, we’re not just reducing carbon; we’re fostering real collaboration across the built environment. But the journey doesn’t stop there. The true power of PAS 2080 lies in how we continue to learn, adapt, and share what works. By doing so, we can unlock the full potential of this standard, making an even greater impact on decarbonisation and setting the stage for a more sustainable future. In this article, Chris Landsburgh and Kallum Desai share their learnings about how PAS 2080 is shaping the built environment’s sustainable future:?https://lnkd.in/eu6_hXT8

AECOM’s Resilience and Nature-based Solutions Team collaborated with FEMA?in Puerto Rico to create job aids focused on natural and nature-based solutions. AECOM led the effort, with support from The Nature Conservancy?and local NGO Protectores de Cuencas Inc. The job aids offer tailored guidance for Puerto Rican communities to pursue NNBS projects for FEMA-funded initiatives and beyond. FEMA is also working on Spanish versions of the documents for publication. We are grateful for the hard work of our job aid technical leads, David Moulton, EIT?for Coastal Shoreline Restoration, Marissa Swift?for Streambank Stabilization, and Isabella Gandara?for Stormwater Management, for creating excellent job aid materials. This team received valuable support from an AECOM group of technical advisors and our partners, demonstrating our capability to deliver in emerging and diverse technical fields. This is a monumental step forward in our continued commitment and leadership in resiliency and sustainability efforts.
