The Natural Capital Laboratory (NCL) is advancing cutting-edge research to show how rewilding can combat climate change and biodiversity loss. As we reach a five-year milestone, we’re sharing insights from our work, demonstrating how impactful restoration can be achieved innovatively and cost-effectively—empowering future generations to join the rewilding movement. An early discovery at the Natural Capital Laboratory was the presence of degraded peatland where trenches had been dug to create artificial drainage for commercial forestry. As a significant carbon sink, a plan was set to restore the peatland and reduce emissions from degraded peat on site.? Dams were installed across the drainage ditches to help raise the water levels, and water-level monitors set up. There are also plans to seed peat forming sphagnum mosses to support the bog recovery. This project demonstrates that peatland restoration can be done effectively and affordably, providing valuable insights for small landowners and local communities committed to tackling climate change and biodiversity loss. Since the restoration began, we've seen frogs, newts, and insects thrive in the surrounding ponds, highlighting the positive impact on biodiversity. Founded in 2019, the Natural Capital Laboratory is a pioneering project by AECOM, Roger Leese and Emilia Leese ???, Lifescape Project, and University of Cumbria. Together, we are rewilding Birchfield, restoring habitats, reintroducing species, and measuring rewilding’s impact on nature and people.? Deer can affect carbon sequestration in both direct and indirect ways. Directly, they remove vegetation and can prevent or slow down natural regeneration. Indirectly, they promote dominance of less palatable species and affect ecosystem productivity. At the NCL, we observe how this balance plays out, helping us understand the link between species and carbon sequestration rates. ? ?
