“What does that ?? smell that I don’t?” Analytical chemistry has methods to find an answer. In this case, scientists are looking for the chemical compounds responsible for the smell of powdery mildew. A group at Texas Tech University uses solid-phase microextraction to absorb volatile compounds from the air around healthy and infected grape leaves. Their analysis, in partnership with another group that studies working dogs, will reveal which molecules the dogs respond to.
