In the first panel session of the day, Tony Groat (IPAF), TJ Lyons (Lyonetics), and Scott Owyen (Genie) emphasized the importance of following standards for exiting a MEWP (Mobile Elevating Work Platform) at height. The standard is clear:?‘Exiting (or entering) a MEWP at height shall only be permitted through a procedure provided by the manufacturer or qualified person.’?Supervisors play a critical role in ensuring operators are trained, the correct MEWP is selected, and risk assessments are completed - steps beyond the operator's direct control that are essential for a safe work environment. The panel highlighted that while operators often “find a way to get it done,” it’s crucial to guide them to do it safely. TJ Lyons stressed the importance of stepping up and holding people accountable, despite concerns such as reluctance to report issues out of fear of backlash. Ensuring compliance and fostering a culture of safety must remain a top priority. #workingatheight2024

TJ Lyons, CRIS, OHST, CSP, Owner of Lyonetics Consulting, highlighted the importance of preventing MEWP incidents through proactive machine design. Rather than just protecting workers after the fact, we must focus on designing out hazards before they occur, considering the US is the largest market in the powered access sector - "this is an embarrassment to the US". TJ reinforced the idea that the safest place to work is on the ground and emphasized how proper MEWP selection can enhance both safety and productivity. TJ also delivered staggering statistics, over 2000 workers die every year in the construction industry, and 5000 take their own lives. For every 1 death, 25 others try and fail. TJ also pointed out the challenges of an ageing workforce and the industry's resistance to change, with the mindset of "we’ve always done it this way" still prevalent. Nate Hoover, Director of Product Management for Boom Lifts at JLG Industries Inc., shared valuable insights on the evolving role of Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs) in transforming job sites. His focus? The intersection of safety, productivity, and innovation. A significant highlight was the concept of ecosystem orchestration: a holistic approach encompassing dynamic monitoring and modification, self-guided and centralized positioning, and automation solutions designed to boost efficiency. IPAF President Karel Huijser opened the inaugural Working at Height Conference. Reflecting on his journey into the powered access sector, Huijser emphasized the profound role of storytelling in professional growth and safety culture. Karel highlighted the critical need to address failures openly—not to dwell on them, but to learn from them. His powerful words, “Story tell not because it’s easy but because it’s hard,” driving home how important it is to share experiences for everyone’s safety and growth.
