Facilitating the transfer of new technologies, research and innovations to outside partners to benefit pediatric care.

关于我们

The Office of Technology Commercialization (OTC) at Nationwide Children's Hospital and its expert team facilitate the transfer of innovative technologies and research ranging from new therapeutics — including the recently approved, first-of-their-kind gene therapies Zolgensma and ELEVIDYS, FDA-approved treatments for Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) and Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) — to biomarkers, diagnostic tools and clinical tools — such as the Comfort Collar, designed to prevent pressure wounds around tracheostomy tubes — to outside partners to benefit patients, the local community and the general public. As a result, Nationwide Children’s Hospital has earned its reputation as an institution with a remarkable track record of moving discoveries into the marketplace. And the hospital’s physicians and researchers haven’t slowed down in their quest to bring more life-saving therapies to children everywhere.

  • Matthew McFarland O Captain, Our Captain – As you embark on a new journey, we gathered one last time to celebrate the wonderful memories shared while at Nationwide Children's Hospital. During your 13-year tenure, Nationwide Children’s achieved the highest income from technology licensing of any Ohio research institution, increasing annual deal flow by more than 900%. These novel deal structures with licensing partners were vital in bringing additional development resources to the institution. You were key to the recruitment and establishment of industrial partners in Columbus and brokering strategic partnerships for Nationwide Children’s. Nationwide Children’s Hospital now has a total of 32 active licenses generating revenue, 20 active startups, and more than 800 issued patents worldwide. For these reasons and many more, Columbus Business First named you to their Power 125 list last year. We are all so proud of you! Thanks, in great part to your unwavering guidance and leadership, technology commercialization is flourishing at Nationwide Children’s, allowing more opportunities to reinvest back into research and continue to strive for best outcomes for children in Columbus and around the world. • The 2025 OTC Technology Showcase will be held at Nationwide Children's Hospital Conference Center tomorrow at 1 p.m. Join us as presenters showcase their innovative research, novel interventions and startup companies generated from the Abigail Wexner Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. The keynote event, led by David A. Williams, MD, will address sickle cell disease. Afterward, a networking reception will be held. Peter White, PhD, champions data-driven innovation as the inaugural Chief Data Sciences Officer of the Abigail Wexner Research Institute at Nationwide Children's Hospital, developing and implementing a robust data science strategy. His work analyzes and integrates diverse data, like genomic data and electronic health records, to improve diagnosis methods and treat pediatric diseases. In his presentation, White will explain the importance of VarHouse, an AI learning tool that aids in quickly interpreting and determining genomic changes relevant to disease, like rare genetic disorders and cancer. “What we’ve done looks easy, which is good thing, but it’s incredibly difficult,” says White. With 3 billion data points for each patient, it’s a tough task, but this groundbreaking genomic data warehouse will accelerate diagnoses, streamline data management and enable tailored cancer treatments. Precision medicine is imperative for clinical use, and it’s not just limited to pediatrics. Due to its advanced cloud computing, the platform translates to most medical environments. To broaden the impact, White aims to find a commercial partner for Varhouse and advance clinical care, drive innovation in research and personalize medicine, both here and abroad. • The 2025 OTC Technology Showcase will be held at Nationwide Children's Hospital Conference Center this Wednesday at 1 p.m. Register here for in-person or virtual attendance. https://lnkd.in/gbvptWpj Join us as presenters showcase their innovative research, novel interventions and startup companies generated from the Abigail Wexner Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. The keynote event, led by David A. Williams, MD, will address sickle cell disease. Afterward, a networking reception will be held. Eric Youngstrom, PhD, is the Director of the Institute for Mental and Behavioral Health Research at Nationwide Children’s Hospital and the DiMarco Family Professor of Psychiatry at The Ohio State University. In his presentation, Dr. Youngstrom will explore the evolution of psychological science assessments. Throughout the years, modern scientific breakthroughs led to improved screenings and early detection methods, more accurate diagnoses, enhanced treatment matching, personalized progress, and outcome tracking. But these advances are “helping almost no one, because they are buried in professional silos, paywalled journals, and with fragmentary implementation,” says Dr. Youngstrom. Dr. Youngstrom will discuss a prototype for a comprehensive assessment delivery system that actively prioritizes the patient and provider by providing them with state-of-the-art tools for each stage of the treatment process. Evidently, this will provide more equitable and efficient care with better health outcomes. Dr. Youngstrom adds, “like a garden or a soufflé, success depends on a sequenced plan and curation along the way.” Visit here for more information about the Technology Showcase, including agenda and parking details. https://lnkd.in/dNuETuF #GuidingIdeasToSolutions #InnovateWithUs #TechnologyShowcase

  • The 2025 OTC Technology Showcase will be held at Nationwide Children's Hospital Conference Center on Wednesday, March 12th at 1 p.m. Register here for in-person or virtual attendance. https://bit.ly/4g7jGMA Join us as presenters showcase their innovative research, novel interventions and startup companies generated from the Abigail Wexner Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. The keynote event, led by David A. Williams, MD, will address sickle cell disease. Afterward, a networking reception will be held. Jenny Barker, MD, PhD, is a physician scientist specializing in pediatric plastic and reconstructive surgery. After completing a postdoctoral research fellowship at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, Dr. Barker joined the Nationwide Children's faculty in 2023 as an Assistant Professor of Pediatric Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. She is also director of the Comprehensive Wound Program and the Adolescent Breast Program. Due to a pathologic foreign body reaction called “capsular contracture,” implant breast reconstruction has high complication rates and high operative revision rates. To reduce the foreign body capsules around breast implants from forming, Dr. Barker’s lab identified a class of drugs indicated in breast cancer: selective estrogen modulators, or endoxifen. This innovative and collaborative research directly addresses the unmet needs of breast reconstruction patients. Dr. Barker's presentation will focus on technology that locally delivers drugs around breast implants to reduce capsular contracture and surgery complications. The keynote event, led by David A. Williams, MD, will address sickle cell disease. Afterward, a networking reception will be held. Nationwide Children's Hospital Medication Safety Officer Jenna Merandi, PharmD, MS, CPPS, and Senior Solutions Developer Erin Ahrens, BSN, RN will outline the need for an enhanced IV-line clamp and its potential impact on patient safety. They both optimize existing tools in an established workflow to overcome obstacles to success and safety on clinical frontlines. Ahrens says, “I’ve been a nurse for over 20 years, and my biggest fear was not being able to change the mental mindset around a product that’s existed for 70 years.” But the positive input from clinicians and staff revealed the intrinsic value in this device, which made an essential impact on Merandi and Ahrens’ innovation process. “To make our medical system safer, we need solutions brought from the frontlines,” says Merandi. Both Merandi and Ahrens want to encourage technological innovation from clinicians, even if they’re not in a research role.
