    Summary: Helen A. Brohl retired in January 2023 as the Executive Director of the US Committee on the Marine Transportation System (CMTS). In July 2006, Helen was selected by then-Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta to establish the CMTS partnership with over 25 Federal agency members to ensure that the marine transportation system (MTS) is safe, secure, efficient, and environmentally sustainable. Working with senior political, military and civilian leaders in the Federal government, Ms. Brohl directed the development and Cabinet-level approval in 2008 of the first-ever National Strategy for the Marine Transportation System and updates of October 2017 and January 2023. During her tenure, the CMTS has published numerous documents related to coastal resilience, maritime supply chain, integration of the MTS into national ocean policy, impacts of shipping in the U.S. Arctic including Tribal engagement, sea service veteran hiring, maritime workforce support under the pandemic, supply chain navigation technology integration, system performance metrics, and infrastructure investment. In 2011 and in 2014, Ms. Brohl was appointed by the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Civil Works as a Commissioner of the US Section of the World Association for Waterborne Transport. From March to October 2012, Ms. Brohl was detailed to the US Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, NY at the request of the Secretary of Transportation to develop the Academy's strategic plan. In 2016, Helen was named maritime policy woman of the year by the Organization of American States. In January 2023, she received the bronze de Fleury Medal from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Distinguished Public Service Award from the U.S. Coast Guard for her service.
