  • James Pennington

Providing services: Educational Consulting, Training, Writing, Editing

    San Francisco, CA

Summary: I teach English. In China, Mexico, the US, and by videoconference. My specialties are ESL, English language test prep, English for Academic Purposes, reading comprehension, critical analysis, grammar, and composition. I've taught hundreds of university students and adult English-language learners, tutored middle schoolers in reading comprehension and writing, and prepared ambitious students for global entrance examinations. As a student of multiple languages myself, I have tremendous empathy for students of English, whether it's a first or a foreign language. I prioritize a low-stress and encouraging learning environment. I teach test prep. To study in another country, you need to know the language. Standardized exams like IELTS and TOEFL test your ability to use English, and your score determines your overseas school options. It's a lot of pressure, but this is the time to really show off your language skills. I give diagnostic tests, create study plans, teach targeted lessons, emphasize test-taking strategies, score practice tests, and provide practical, native-speaker insights into spoken and written expression. I teach language. Language is a unique and powerful tool, and a key factor in academic spaces where understanding nuance, organizing ideas, thinking critically, and conveying information and expressing yourself with confidence are necessary for success. I help students improve research skills, oral presentations, and academic writing to pave the way to higher education success.
