In July 2024, U.S. retail sales of medium-duty trucks rebounded after two months of decline, increasing 6% year-over-year to 20,792 units. Class 7 and Class 5 trucks led the growth with 16.5% and 11% increases, respectively. However, Class 4 and Class 6 trucks saw slight declines. The rise in Class 7 sales was driven by private fleets and rental segments, with Freightliner leading in sales for Class 7 trucks. Buckle up...not at the bottom of the #freightrecession "While capacity is slowly exiting the industry, Vise noted the rate of exits has slowed – there was actually net carrier growth in August. But he added it will take more than a loss of capacity to improve rates, noting that will have to be complemented by an increase in freight volumes. Adding to the woes of for-hire carriers is the fact private fleets are adding capacity and pulling more of their freight in-house to avoid supply chain-related issues seen during the post-pandemic boom. Ryder System, Inc. Board Chairman and CEO Robert Sanchez discussed Ryder’s recent analysis of the total cost of ownership for EV trucks, which is significantly more than diesel. These findings confirmed a recent study commissioned by fellow panelist Jim Mullen of the Clean Freight Coalition, which calculated a nearly $1 trillion price tag for the full electrification of medium- and heavy-duty trucks. As Robert pointed out, fleets need incentives to upgrade to newer, cleaner trucks as we develop a long-term solution. #MYMGMT24

[September Preliminary State of the Industry: U.S. Trailers Update] - Preliminary Net Trailer Orders Indicate Pause Button Remains Pressed Preliminary net trailer orders rose about 500 units from July to August, but at 7,700 units, were lower compared to last August, down 40% y/y. Seasonal adjustment (SA) at this point in the annual order cycle boosts August’s tally to 9,500 units, down about 7% from last month. Final August results will be available later this month. DAT Dry Van Load-2-Truck Ratio May 27 - June 2: ~Dry van load post volume was within 3% of last year following last week’s short work week. The w/w change in volume was also identical to last year at 8%. ~Carrier equipment posts were 24% lower than last year following last week’s 20% w/w decrease. ~Load-2-Truck ratio increased 14% w/w to 5.23. #freightmarket #supplychain #transportation #logistics #trucking

Dry Van Freight Market Update Week 35: ~Retail events like Labor Day Sales, Back-to-School shopping, and upcoming Halloween parties are expected to increase truckload volumes in the Allentown, Harrisburg, & Philly markets.  ~Allentown has seen truckload volumes increase by 5.4% in the last month which has raised spot rates up over 2% of this time frame last year. ~Allentown > Charlotte paid trucks an average of $1.50/mile which is $0.17/mile higher than Week 35 2023. ~Harrisburg > Boston averaged $3.19/mile which is also up 2% y/y. #freightmarket #supplychain #transportation #logistics #trucking

DAT Dry Van-2-Truck Ratio Week 41: ~ Following the pre-hurricane surge in the Southeast, load post volumes erased the prior week’s gains and dropped 14% w/w.  ~ Volumes are still around 2% higher y/y. ~ Carrier equipment posts were flat and didn’t see any movement. ~DAT’s Dry Van Load-2-Truck ratio dropped 14% to 3.78, a 1/3 higher than 2023 for this week. #freight #supplychain #trucking #transportation #logistics
