Zooming in on digitalization in the GCC

Today, Siemens and Strategy& launched the “Preparing for the digital era: the state of digitalization in GCC businesses” report at Dubai’s 3D-printed Office of the Future. We highlighted key findings from a joint study that are intended to help encourage the progress and evolution of digitalization among the region’s businesses.

This is particularly pertinent as our world is becoming ever more digitalized. Billions of devices and machines are generating massive amounts of data; the real and virtual worlds are merging. The ability to capture this data, analyze it and use it to drive real value will shape the future of globally competitive business, industry, and infrastructure in the GCC countries.

At Siemens, this is our future. We believe that digitalization is a catalyst for new business models and optimized processes. It will drive significant change in markets and strategy. Identifying the right digital applications with appropriate implementation strategies will enable companies, industries, and countries to reach the next level of productivity, and therefore competitiveness.

There are tremendous opportunities. The GCC is taking great strides toward economic diversification. Knowledge, industrialization, and sustainable energy are in focus. Cities are becoming smarter, infrastructure increasingly connected, and efficiency gains are being sought across all sectors. Digitalization is driving these transformations.

We surveyed over 300 companies in the region. Around 60% of respondents believe digitalization has the potential to create new business models or lead to a more open culture of innovation. However, only 3% believe they are at an advanced stage of their digital transformation process, with only 18% using the cloud and 30% using big data and analytics specifically.

There is a high risk for utility to deploy New technology , The main theme at EUW16 @ Barcelona was that utility transformation is inevitable. It will have many challenges, but also a variety of opportunities. To address the challenges, utilities need to create a strategy with service providers who understand current and future business models, and who are empowered with a full spectrum of advisory, software, testing and certification services
