Zoom vs Goliath

Brillio is a Zoom customer. We have been using Zoom for more than 3 years now. When I first used Zoom I never thought that Zoom as a company will excel financially. They were competing in a space where you have WebEx and Google Hangout. Google was the undisputed champion of Video, Audio & Chat. Additionally, they have calendar & email apps that many customers use. Who would possibly buy Zoom when you can have an 'integrated' experience of mail, calendar and conferencing.

But here we are today and Zoom is way ahead of Hangout. I think Zoom won and Hangout lost because -

  1. Zoom tried to do one thing and did it extremely well. Google, on the other hand, has many things to do.
  2. Collaboration is hard. In spite of owning mail and calendar, Google could not get the various groups together to create an integrated experience.
  3. KISS (Keep it simple stupid). Related to the first point. Zoom kept focusing on reliability, video and audio quality. All the features they developed released 100% ready.
