ZOOM Body Language?!
During our ZOOM calls, we often focus on what we're saying; however, we should not neglect our body language. We often communicate feelings and attitudes to others without even realizing it. How we sit during a ZOOM call (or stand) are important factors that can put us in a better opportunity to connect with our audience.
To help you identify what your body is saying, here are some thoughts:
- Slouched shoulders. By dropping your shoulders, you’re showing your audience that you’re bored or may be tired of the exchange. Plus, it could show people on the call that you feel inadequate.
- Constant movement. If you’re talking to someone and they're constantly squirming in their chair, it could be revealing that they’re anxious. It could also mean they need to use the bathroom. :-)
- Head down. When you look down at your camera, it makes it harder to give proper eye contact. It would help if you were looking straight out into your camera.
- Bouncing eyes. When you are engaging with an audience on ZOOM, it is essential to continue to look at the camera during the exchange. If you're continually looking at the people on the screen, it will make it more difficult for you to connect with people on the call due to poor eye contact.
- Arms crossed. When you are seated, and you have your arms crossed, you’re covering your midsection, but more importantly, you’re covering your heart. This type of posture screams to the world “that you’re closed,” and you’re not going to connect with the people on the call.
When you take time to notice how you’re moving your body when you’re on a ZOOM call, you can make a conscious effort to utilize proper body language. If you can do this, you will put yourself in a better position (literally) to succeed.

4 年Good points. I often look at the people who are on the screen and talking as I like to see them. I suppose it makes me look like my eyes are wandering. Of course, as you stated, I should look at the camera when speaking. Loved the comment about squirming in the chair! Gotta go.
