Zombies, Slow, But Persistent

Inattentional Blindness can turn your laundromat into a Zombiemat?.

Simply put, Inattentional Blindness is the inability to see new stimuli when you're already focused on something else.

Let me give you a few examples you might recognize:

  • You notice some paint is peeling on the wall, but the coin machine light flashing "out of service" commands your attention.
  • Several washers are out of order, but the number of stickers on them, which are peeling slightly at the corners, seems insignificant.
  • The HVAC is acting up, and a light bulb is burnt out in one of the many ceiling lights.

In those examples, one issue will command your attention over the other.

But, the issue you overlook could turn your laundromat into a Zombiemat?.

Think of it this way: That burnt-out lightbulb may not seem like a priority but left unaddressed, it can lead to a dimly lit, dingy-looking store.

The peeling stickers don’t seem important, but if you don’t fix them, it’ll look like you don’t care about your machines.

The peeling paint may seem like just part of having a store, but if you don’t scrape and repaint, your store can feel dirty.

So, how do you avoid this Inattentional Blindness and keep your store from turning into a Zombiemat??

In this week’s Wash Weekly, I share my strategy for combatting Inattentional Blindness and finding the little issues that can turn my store into a Zombiemat?.

I love this system because it’s easy to implement, and you can involve your entire team.
